360 Product View An interactive or image-based view that lets shoppers see a product from all sides. Merchants deciding between 360 photography and fully modeled 3D assets must weigh fidelity, interactivity, production cost, and use cases.


Both approaches give shoppers rotational context, but they are fundamentally different. A 360 product view is typically photographic: it displays captured images taken at regular angular intervals and presents a realistic surface look. A 3D model is geometry generated in software (or scanned) that supports arbitrary viewpoint, lighting changes, and more advanced interactions like part disassembly or AR overlays.

When To Choose 360 Photography


Choose 360 product views when photographic accuracy matters and when you want a relatively quick, predictable production pipeline. Clothing, shoes, jewelry, furniture, and appliances often benefit from photographic rotation because subtle texture, stitch detail, or finish are important buying signals. If you need fast time-to-market and already have studio photo setups, adding a turntable pass is efficient.


When 3D Models Make Sense


Opt for 3D models when interactivity beyond rotation is valuable: virtual try-on, configurators (color/part swapping), exploded views for technical goods, AR placement that needs real-world scale, or when the same asset will be reused in multiple contexts (marketing videos, configurators, VR). High-end furniture retailers and automotive or industrial suppliers often choose 3D for configurators and AR experiences.


Hybrid Approaches


Many merchants combine both. Use 360 photography for standard product pages to showcase true surface realism, and provide a 3D model for the configurator or AR preview. Photogrammetry and texture-mapped models let you generate 3D assets from real photography, bridging realism and interactivity when budgets permit.


Cost And Timeline Considerations


360 shoots require a studio space, turntable, consistent lighting, and post-processing; a small team can process tens of SKUs per day. 3D modeling timelines depend on complexity: simple consumer goods may require days; complex models and materials or photoreal rendering can take weeks. Factor in iterative approvals, optimization for web delivery, and integration with product feeds.


Technical And UX Implications


3D viewers require WebGL-capable browsers and careful performance tuning. Provide fallbacks: a 360 viewer or static image for unsupported devices. For 360 photography, employ lazy-loading, progressive image formats like WebP, and mobile-friendly controls. Track engagement metrics separately for each format to measure time-on-page, conversion lift, and impact on returns.
