Accessory insertion usually happens at packing time and is often conditional (region-specific adapter) or mandatory for each primary SKU.


How Accessory Insertion Differs From Kitting


  • Timing: Kitting can be pre-assembled and stored as a kit; accessory insertion is frequently a last-mile packing activity.
  • Inventory Units: Kitted items may become a single inventory unit with its own SKU; accessory insertion keeps primary SKU and accessory SKUs separate until shipment.

Bundles are less flexible for late-stage customization but reduce picking complexity when volume supports it.

Systems And WMS Configuration Differences


WMS needs differ by approach. Kitting requires master kit definitions, BOMs, and often replenishment rules to assemble kits. Accessory insertion requires conditional prompts, validations, and possibly location rules to present accessories during packing. The WMS should support scan-confirmation for both methods but will require different workflows and exceptions handling.

Choose based on SKU diversity, market requirements, and order patterns.

  • Accessory Insertion Best When: Accessories vary by destination (different plugs), promotional inserts vary, or accessories are shared across many SKUs.

  • Bundling Best When: Marketing requires fixed-price offers and simplified shopping experience with one SKU representing the combination.


Practical Example


A cordless drill sold globally may require region-specific chargers. Using accessory insertion, the warehouse keeps chargers in country-specific bins and inserts the correct adapter during packing based on shipping address. Alternatively, if the brand sells a “Drill + Battery Pack” bundle as a promotional unit, they might create a pre-kitted SKU held in storage for quick picking.


Checklist For Choosing A Method


  • Volume Profile: Estimate orders per day and peak variance to understand labor implications.
  • SKU Overlap: Determine whether accessories are shared widely — favors insertion.
  • Localization Needs: If local-specific inserts are required, insertion adds flexibility.
  • WMS Capability: Confirm the system supports conditional insertion workflows or kit BOMs as needed.
