Additional Pick Fee vs Pick-and-Pack Fee: Key Differences and When Each Applies
Additional Pick Fee
Definition
A fee for each pick after the first pick in an order.
Overview
Additional Pick Fee is a fee for each pick after the first pick in an order. It’s one element of order-handling charges; understanding how it differs from broader pick-and-pack fees helps merchants compare 3PL proposals and forecast costs accurately.
Many pricing schedules use overlapping language. This article distinguishes the Additional Pick Fee from related charges such as base pick fees, pack fees, and per-order fees, and shows how those distinctions affect billing and operational decisions.
Basic Definitions To Keep Apart
Clear terminology avoids invoice surprises:
- Per-Order Fee: A flat charge applied to every order, often covering order processing and basic packing.
- Pick-and-Pack Fee: A bundled charge covering both picking and packing, sometimes inclusive of a limited number of picks.
- Additional Pick Fee: A specific incremental fee for each pick after the first in an order (the focus of this article).
- Pack Fee: A charge for packing activities or per carton, separate from picking costs.
How They Interact On An Invoice
Different providers structure invoices differently. Common patterns:
- Bundled Model: One fee covers N picks and packing; additional picks beyond N incur an Additional Pick Fee.
- A La Carte Model: Separate line items for per-order, per-pick, and per-pack charges; the Additional Pick Fee appears only when picks exceed 1 or the included allowance.
- Hybrid Model: Base per-order fee plus per-pick fee for every pick after the first; pack fees may be separate by carton size.
Why The Difference Matters To Merchants
Two merchants with identical sales can receive very different invoices depending on which model their 3PL uses. A bundled pick-and-pack fee looks simple, but if it only includes one or two picks, merchants with many multi-SKU orders will pay high additional-pick charges. Conversely, the a la carte model can be predictable if order profiles are uniform.
When Each Model Is Best
Choose based on your order characteristics:
- High-Volume Single-SKU Orders: A per-order bundled model is often cheaper because extra picks are rare.
- High-SKU, Low-Quantity Orders: Merchants with many multi-line orders benefit from negotiating lower additional-pick rates or a higher number of included picks in a bundle.
- Seasonal Variability: If peak periods change order profiles, a hybrid or tiered model with predictable thresholds reduces surprise costs.
Negotiation Points With Providers
When evaluating 3PL proposals, request clear line-item examples, and ask these questions:
- Included Picks: How many picks are included in the base fee?
- Definition of A Pick: Does a split carton count as a pick? How are multi-bin SKUs handled?
- Tier Breaks: Are there volume discounts or tiered reductions for high-pick order volume?
- Technology Offsets: Will the provider reduce fees if you implement inventory slotting or integrate with their WMS?
Practical Example
Provider A quotes a $6 per-order bundled pick-and-pack fee including one pick; additional picks are $1.50 each. Provider B quotes $4 per order plus $0.75 per pick for every pick (including the first). For a typical order with three picks, Provider A charges $6 + ($1.50 x 2) = $9. Provider B charges $4 + ($0.75 x 3) = $6.25. The lower headline rate from Provider A may be misleading for multi-pick orders.
In short, the Additional Pick Fee is a precise incremental charge for extra picks; understanding how it sits alongside per-order and pack fees is essential to cost modeling and to negotiating the most economical fulfillment agreement for your order mix.
