Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing model where individuals or businesses (affiliates) earn commissions by promoting another company's products or services and driving sales or leads.
Overview
Affiliate Marketing is a popular, beginner-friendly way to earn money online by promoting products or services created by other companies. At its core, it’s a performance-based arrangement: an affiliate (you) shares a merchant’s product with an audience, and when someone takes a desired action (click, lead, or purchase) through the affiliate’s unique link, the affiliate earns a commission. This model connects three main players: the merchant (brand or seller), the affiliate (publisher or promoter), and the customer. Sometimes an affiliate network or platform coordinates tracking, reporting, and payments.
How it works in practice is straightforward yet powered by technical systems that ensure fair attribution.
An affiliate signs up for an affiliate program—either directly with a merchant or through a network such as ShareASale, CJ, or Rakuten. The merchant issues unique tracking links, coupon codes, or pixels. When a consumer clicks an affiliate link, a cookie or other tracking identifier is set in the consumer’s browser. If the consumer completes the desired action within the cookie’s lifespan (for example, 30 days), the sale or lead is attributed to the affiliate and the merchant pays a predefined commission.
Common commission structures include:
- Pay-per-sale (PPS): The affiliate earns a percentage of the sale value—typical for physical products and many online services.
- Pay-per-lead (PPL): Payment is made when a visitor completes a form, signs up for a trial, or requests a quote—common in finance, insurance, or software demos.
- Pay-per-click (PPC): The affiliate gets paid for clicks driven to the merchant’s site—less common because it carries more risk for merchants.
- Hybrid models: A mix of a small base fee plus performance bonuses or tiered commissions.
Tracking technologies have evolved beyond simple cookies.
Many programs now use server-side tracking, fingerprinting, or mobile deep links to ensure accurate attribution across devices and browsers. Still, cookie duration (how long an affiliate is credited after a click) remains an important metric—longer durations can increase the likelihood of earning commissions when customers take time to decide.
Affiliates use a variety of channels to promote products, such as blogs, YouTube, social media, email newsletters, paid advertising, and coupon sites. Content that educates, reviews, or demonstrates a product typically converts better than generic promotional posts because it builds trust and helps buyers make informed decisions. For example, a tech blogger reviewing headphones and linking to a merchant’s product page via an affiliate link is a classic, effective use of affiliate marketing.
There are also different program types to consider
- In-house affiliate programs: Managed directly by the merchant, often offering closer relationships and custom deals.
- Affiliate networks: Third-party platforms that aggregate programs across many merchants and simplify onboarding, reporting, and payouts.
- Influencer affiliate arrangements: Tailored partnerships with social media creators using unique codes and tracking to measure performance.
Affiliate Marketing benefits merchants by shifting much of the promotional cost to results—merchants pay only for measurable outcomes. For affiliates, it offers low startup costs (no product creation, inventory, or customer support required) and flexible income potential. Many small businesses and creators use affiliate marketing as a supplemental revenue stream; others scale it into full-time income by building authority websites, email lists, or sizable social followings.
Important considerations include compliance and transparency. In many countries, affiliates and publishers must disclose that links are affiliate links to maintain trust and comply with regulations (for example, FTC guidelines in the United States). Ethical affiliates recommend products they genuinely believe in and are transparent about their relationships with merchants.
