AOV Average order value, the average revenue generated per order. In practice, AOV measures the amount a customer spends each time they place an order; AOV is a transaction-level metric while related metrics like customer lifetime value (CLV) measure revenue over a relationship. Warehouse managers, eCommerce merchants, and 3PL operators rely on both figures—but for different operational and strategic decisions.
AOV answers the question: how much revenue does each purchase typically bring? CLV answers: how much will this customer spend across multiple purchases over time? Confusing the two leads to misallocated marketing budgets, wrong inventory assumptions, and shipping-cost blind spots. While CLV helps determine which customers are worth keeping, AOV helps determine how to serve each order profitably.
How AOV Impacts Fulfillment And Shipping Costs
Higher AOV usually means more revenue per shipment, which absorbs a larger portion of fixed per-order handling and shipping costs. That makes services like free-shipping thresholds and promotional bundles viable. Low AOV merchants must reduce per-order costs—consolidate SKUs, use polybags instead of boxes for low-weight items, or offer pickup options.

Prioritize CLV when business strategy is growth and retention-focused: launching subscription services, investing in customer service, or planning multi-year financial projections. Long-term investment in retention can increase CLV even if AOV remains stable.
Practical Example
A small apparel merchant sees AOV of $45 and average order handling cost of $8 plus shipping of $7—total per-order cost $15. That leaves $30 to cover COGS and margin. After analyzing CLV, the merchant finds frequent repeat purchases from a loyal segment whose CLV is $300; marketing decides to spend $40 to acquire customers in that segment. The math only works because CLV is substantially higher than AOV alone would suggest; fulfillment adjusts by prioritizing pack accuracy and returns processing for that segment.
Tips For Combining AOV And CLV In Operations
- Segment Orders: Track AOV by channel, SKU category, and customer cohort to spot pockets of high-margin orders that merit premium fulfillment.
- Use Thresholds: Set free-shipping thresholds above the average cost break-even point to lift AOV without losing conversion.
- Integrate Systems: Feed AOV and CLV signals into WMS and OMS to route orders differently—expedite high-AOV orders or allocate premium packing resources.
In short, the AOV metric quantifies per-order revenue and should be used alongside CLV, not in place of it. AOV informs operational efficiency and per-order profitability; CLV informs acquisition and retention strategy.
