Bid Scenario vs Bid Strategy: How They Differ And When To Use Each
Bid Scenario
Definition
A modeled advertising outcome based on changes to bid levels or bidding strategy.
Overview
Bid Scenario is a modeled advertising outcome based on changes to bid levels or bidding strategy. It is not the same as a bid strategy — a scenario is an analysis or forecast, while a bid strategy is the rule or algorithm you execute in your campaign.
Understanding the distinction matters because each serves a different role in campaign planning. A bid strategy (manual CPC, target CPA, maximize conversions, target ROAS, enhanced CPC, etc.) is what controls live behavior inside an ad platform. A bid scenario is what you run to estimate the effect of switching strategies or adjusting parameters of your existing strategy before making the change.
Core Differences
- Function: A bid strategy runs live and determines bids in auctions; a bid scenario forecasts outcomes if you change bids or strategies.
- Timeframe: Strategies operate continuously; scenarios are episodic and used for planning or testing.
- Output: Strategy produces real performance; scenario produces projected performance metrics.
When To Use A Scenario Instead Of Immediate Strategy Changes
Scenarios are useful in these situations:
- Risk Mitigation: Before adopting a new automated bidding approach, model expected CPA/ROAS and volume impacts.
- Budget Allocation: To compare outcomes of different allocations (e.g., move $10k from branded search to prospecting display with different bids).
- Seasonal Planning: Forecast how increased bids during peak season will affect spend and ROAS.
When A Strategy Is The Better Tool
Use an actual bid strategy when you want the system to optimize in real time across many signals that humans cannot continuously manage. Examples:
- Large-Scale Optimization: Automated bidding learns from many signals and scales across thousands of keywords or SKUs more efficiently than manual rules.
- Dynamic Objectives: When objectives change frequently (e.g., shifting from brand awareness to conversion focus), live strategies adapt faster than manual changes.
How To Combine Both For Better Results
Best practice is to pair scenarios and strategies rather than treat them as alternatives. Steps to combine effectively:
- Model First: Run scenarios to estimate likely outcomes of candidate strategies or bid levels.
- Test Small: Implement the strategy on a subset of campaigns or for a limited time window.
- Measure Against Scenario: Compare live results to the scenario forecast to validate assumptions and refine future scenarios.
Practical Example
An e-commerce team is deciding whether to switch to target ROAS for top-selling product categories. They run two scenarios: a conservative target ROAS matching current profitability and an aggressive one aiming to increase revenue by 30%. The scenarios predict that the conservative target will maintain volume while improving efficiency slightly; the aggressive target risks a drop in impression share and short-term volume loss. The team tests the conservative target ROAS on 20% of spend, monitors the learning period, and then expands if real performance tracks scenario predictions.
Key Caveats
Remember these limitations when interpreting scenarios:
- Platform Differences: Simulators and forecast tools vary by platform; a scenario from one provider may not translate exactly to another.
- Learning Periods: Many automated strategies require time to learn — initial post-change metrics may not match steady-state scenario output.
- Data Quality: Scenarios are only as good as the input data. Low-volume campaigns have higher variance and less reliable forecasts.
In short, the Bid Scenario is a forecasting exercise that complements a bid strategy. Use scenarios to evaluate options and reduce risk, then apply a live bid strategy at scale while measuring results against scenario projections.
