Blended ROAS

Definition

Return on ad spend measured across all advertising channels combined rather than a single platform or campaign.

Overview

Blended ROAS is return on ad spend measured across all advertising channels combined rather than a single platform or campaign. Comparing it to platform ROAS reveals gaps between aggregate performance and individual-channel efficiency.

Key Differences Between Blended And Platform ROAS

Platform ROAS measures revenue divided by spend on a single platform—Google, Meta, Amazon, etc. It’s valuable for optimizing bids and creatives on that platform. Blended ROAS aggregates spend and revenue across platforms to show overall media effectiveness.

Platform ROAS supports tactical decisions: reduce bids on underperforming placements, increase budgets where ROAS is high. Blended ROAS supports strategic decisions: is total ad spend delivering the required return relative to business margins and goals?

Why The Two Often Diverge

Expect divergence due to attribution, customer journeys, and cross-channel assists.

  • Attribution models: Platforms may credit conversions differently; a platform using last-click will show higher direct ROAS for lower-funnel ads than one reporting view-through-assisted conversions.
  • Cross-channel assists: Upper-funnel channels often assist conversions credited to search or marketplace placements in platform reports.
  • Reporting windows: Differences in lookback windows and conversion windows create mismatched numbers unless standardized.

How To Reconcile The Two Metrics

Reconciliation requires a single source of truth for spend and conversions.

  • Aggregate spend centrally: Pull platform spend data into a central BI tool to ensure consistent period alignment and currency handling.
  • Apply one attribution model: Choose and document a company-level model (e.g., data-driven or time-decay) and apply it when attributing conversions for blended ROAS.
  • Deduplicate conversions: Use unique order IDs or a customer data platform (CDP) to prevent double-counting across channels.

When Platform ROAS Is More Actionable

Use platform ROAS for channel-specific optimization. Examples include bid adjustments, creative testing, placement exclusions, and publisher negotiations. If a platform shows a low ROAS and limited assist behavior, reallocate or pause spend quickly.

When Blended ROAS Is The Better KPI

Blended ROAS rules when decisions affect multiple channels or when leadership needs a single profitability metric for media. It’s also essential during strategic campaigns—holiday push, new product launch—where dispersing spend across channels is intentional and performance must be judged holistically.

Practical Reconciliation Workflow

  • Step 1: Export spend and conversions from each platform for the same date range and currency.
  • Step 2: Normalize conversion values (e.g., net revenue after discounts or returned goods) and map order IDs to avoid duplicates.
  • Step 3: Re-attribute conversions using the agreed company model and compute blended ROAS = total attributed revenue ÷ total spend.

Done regularly, this workflow prevents misleading conclusions like cutting a high-assist upper-funnel channel because platform ROAS looks poor while blended ROAS remains healthy.

In short, platform ROAS and Blended ROAS answer different questions. Use platform ROAS to optimize execution at the channel level and blended ROAS to validate the overall media strategy and budget allocation.
