Blended Sales

Definition

Combined paid-attributed and non-paid sales used to evaluate total business performance.

Overview

Blended Sales are the combined paid-attributed and non-paid sales used to evaluate total business performance. Comparing blended sales to attributed sales clarifies what each metric reveals and where each should be used in ecommerce decision-making.

Attributed sales report revenue that specific platforms or tracking systems assign to marketing campaigns. Blended sales combine those attributed numbers with the remaining non-attributed revenue recorded in the commerce system. The difference matters because attribution rules and windows vary across systems, and each metric answers different business questions.

Key Differences

  • Scope: Attributed sales focus on channel-to-order relationships; blended sales cover all recognized orders in the reporting period.
  • Use Case: Attributed sales are for campaign optimization and channel ROI; blended sales are for high-level revenue tracking, forecasting, and operations planning.
  • Sensitivity to Rules: Attributed sales are highly sensitive to attribution windows and cookie behavior; blended sales are less sensitive because they include non-attributed demand.

When Attributed Sales Are Preferable

Attributed sales should be used when you need to know which marketing efforts drove conversions. Examples: evaluating ad creative A/B tests, calculating ROAS for a specific platform, or deciding bid adjustments. Attribution supports optimization because it links spend to outcomes at the campaign level.

When Blended Sales Are Preferable

Blended sales are preferable for business-level health checks. Use them when forecasting demand, sizing warehouse and staffing, running P&L reviews, or reporting total net revenue to stakeholders. When platforms disagree about which touchpoint deserves credit, blended sales provide a stable single number.

How To Reconcile The Two Metrics

Reconciliation begins by ensuring both figures tie back to the commerce system’s order records. Steps: extract attributed conversions by order ID, sum the commerce platform’s order totals for the period, then compare the sum of attributed revenue with the total. Investigate gaps for refunds, multi-channel journeys, or offline sales that weren’t tracked by ad platforms.

Practical Trade-Offs

  • Precision vs Stability: Attributed sales offer precision for channel performance but fluctuate with platform changes; blended sales provide stability at the expense of channel detail.
  • Optimization vs Reporting: Use attribution for optimization loops; use blended totals for executive reporting and cross-functional planning.
  • Actionability: Attribution leads to immediate marketing actions (pause a low-ROAS ad); blended figures support business actions (adjust inventory, revise monthly revenue forecasts).

Example Scenarios

Scenario 1 — Marketing Optimization: A paid-search campaign shows a low attributed ROI. The marketing lead uses attributed sales to test new keywords and creatives until ROI improves.

Scenario 2 — Forecasting & Operations: A surprise drop in attributed sales coincides with an overall stable blended sales figure, signaling marketing attribution shifts rather than true demand loss. Operations maintains staffing and inventory based on blended sales.

Practical Tips For Teams

  • Report Both: Surface attributed and blended numbers together in dashboards so stakeholders understand channel performance and total revenue simultaneously.
  • Document Attribution Rules: Record lookback windows, attribution models, and conversion filters in reports so changes are traceable.
  • Use Blended For Forecasting: Use blended sales for capacity planning and monthly revenue targets; reserve attributed metrics for campaign-level budget allocation.

In short, the Blended Sales metric provides a comprehensive revenue view that complements attributed sales; trust attributed numbers for channel optimization and blended totals for business-level reporting and planning.
