Unlike standard pallets made for lighter, general-purpose use, heavy-duty pallets are built with reinforced components, thicker materials, and designs that support higher static and dynamic capacities.

  • Block vs. stringer: Block pallets use solid blocks as supports and allow four-way entry in many designs; stringer pallets use long beams along the length and may be two-way or four-way.
  • Reversible vs. double-face: Reversible pallets have the same top and bottom deck, while double-face pallets have decks on both sides, often increasing capacity and durability.
  • Rackable: Reinforced to carry loads while stored on pallet racking systems.
  • Drum and coil pallets: Specialized platforms shaped or reinforced to secure cylindrical loads such as drums or coils.

  1. Load profile: Consider maximum weight, point loads (heavy concentrated loads), and how loads will be placed or stacked.
  2. Environment: Will the pallet be used outdoors, in cold storage, or in hygienic areas? Material choice affects moisture resistance, corrosion, and cleanability.
  3. Handling and equipment compatibility: Ensure four-way entry, deck height, and entry clearance match forklifts and pallet movers used in your facilities.
  4. Racking requirements: If storing on racks, verify racking capacity and choose rackable pallet designs with known racking ratings.
  5. Regulatory and hygiene needs: Wood pallets for export must meet ISPM15; food or pharmaceutical operations may require FDA-compliant or easily sanitized pallets.
  6. Total cost of ownership: Evaluate purchase price, repairability, lifespan, maintenance, and disposal or recycling costs.


Maintenance, inspection and repair


Regular inspection prevents failures. Check for cracked members, loose boards, corrosion on metal parts, and wear at forklift entry points. For wooden pallets, replace broken boards and tighten or replace fasteners. Plastic pallets can often be washed and sanitized; metal pallets may need corrosion control. Keep a repair log and retire pallets once repair costs exceed value or structural integrity is compromised.
