Sample Worksheet Example


Assume a merchant ships 1,200 parcels per week to a metro area. Carrier direct zone rate averages $10.50 per parcel. The merchant arranges a consolidation truck for $1,200 weekly, labor and materials cost $350 weekly, and the carrier's post-consolidation piece rate is $6.00.


Compute EPC: Consolidation Transport Cost per parcel = $1,200 / 1,200 = $1.00. Labor and materials per parcel = $350 / 1,200 = $0.29. EPC = $1.00 + $6.00 + $0.29 = $7.29. DPC = $10.50. Per-Parcel Savings = $10.50 - $7.29 = $3.21. Weekly Savings = $3.21 x 1,200 = $3,852.


Break-Even Analysis


Calculate the minimum volume needed to break even if fixed consolidation cost changes. If consolidation setup includes a fixed weekly facility charge of $600, then Fixed Consolidation Costs = $600. Per-parcel variable savings (DPC - (post-consolidation piece + variable per-piece handling)) = $10.50 - ($6.00 + $0.29) = $4.21. Break-Even Volume = $600 / $4.21 ≈ 143 parcels per week. That shows the program becomes beneficial above ~143 parcels weekly for that zone.

Also validate that the post-consolidation parcel rate used in modeling is actually available in carrier contracts rather than a tentative estimate.
