Definition

A small product display designed for placement on a retail counter or shelf.

Overview

Countertop Display Unit (CDU) A small product display designed for placement on a retail counter or shelf. Choosing between a CDU and a floor display requires matching merchandising goals to shopper behavior, footprint, and logistics.

Both CDUs and floor displays are point-of-purchase tools intended to drive incremental sales, but they differ in scale, cost, placement options, and shopper interaction. Retailers, brand managers, and merchandisers should weigh footprint constraints, visibility needs, SKU count, and expected lifespan before selecting a fixture type.

Key Differences Between CDU And Floor Displays

Scale and placement are the most obvious distinctions. CDUs occupy counter or shelf real estate and are best for immediate purchase decisions. Floor displays sit on the sales floor or in aisle space and can hold more SKUs, support larger creative treatments, and capture attention from farther away.

  • Visibility: Floor displays attract attention from a distance; CDUs capture shoppers when they are already near a decision point.
  • Capacity: Floor displays carry higher inventory; CDUs are limited to a few dozen units at most.
  • Cost: CDUs tend to be lower cost per fixture; floor displays are larger investments in both production and store labor for placement.
  • Flexibility: CDUs are quick to deploy and rotate; floor displays require planogram changes and more floor space approvals.

When To Use A CDU

Choose a CDU when the goal is impulse conversions, add-on sales, or sampling at the point of sale. Examples include confectionery at checkouts, small electronics accessories at customer service counters, or trial-sized personal care items. CDUs work well for short-term promotions and controlled roll-outs where low cost and ease of placement are priorities.

When To Use A Floor Display

Use floor displays for broader awareness campaigns, large pack sizes, or when you need more SKU variety and stock-on-hand. Seasonal promotions and bulk-pack offers often perform better on the floor where customers have room to evaluate and interact with larger presentations.

Operational And Retailer Considerations

Retailers often charge more for floor space due to lost sales from competing planograms. Floor fixture approval processes are stricter and may require logistics coordination to move displays through back-of-store to the sales floor. CDUs typically require less approval but must meet counter size restrictions and not obstruct staff operations.

  • Approval Process: Floor displays usually require explicit planogram and aisle placement approval; CDUs may be approved faster but still must meet counter safety rules.
  • Installation: Floor displays often need two-person setups and more floor-level handling; CDUs can often be assembled by a single store employee.
  • Compliance: Both must comply with ADA and store safety rules — ensure floor displays don't block aisles or emergency exits.

Decision Framework For Merchandisers

Use this simple framework: If the objective is quick, low-cost lift on a small SKU set at point-of-decision, choose CDU. If the goal is high-volume sales, multi-SKU presentation, or brand storytelling at distance, choose a floor display. Consider pilot testing both formats in a sample of stores to compare measured lift before committing to a full rollout.

Practical Example: Toothbrush Launch

A new compact toothbrush could be trialed via CDUs at pharmacy counters to capture last-minute replacements, especially near checkout where shoppers may add a quick personal-care item. For a family multi-pack launch tied to broad awareness, a floor display in the oral-care aisle with multiple facings would be more appropriate.

In short, the Countertop Display Unit (CDU) is the right choice for high-touch, low-footprint, impulse-focused merchandising; choose floor displays when inventory, visibility from distance, and brand storytelling outweigh the benefits of a compact footprint.
