Common Securement Devices And Their Uses

Devices fall into basic categories useful for retail freight:


  • Stretch Film: Ideal for unitizing pallets; fast application and low cost per load for stable cases.
  • Strapping: Polypropylene (PP) or polyester (PET) straps provide strong lateral restraint—PET is preferred for high-tension, long-haul loads.
  • Edge Protectors: Simple cardboard or plastic corners that prevent strap cutting into cartons and distribute strap pressure.
  • Load Bars and E-Track: Reusable interior restraints that provide secure anchor points and quick securing for mixed loads inside vans.
  • Airbags/ Dunnage Bags: Fill trailer voids to prevent lateral movement—useful for pallet groups and containerized loads.


Material Choices: Strength, Stretch, And Durability

Material selection affects performance under dynamic loads. Key considerations:


  • Tensile Strength: Heavier loads require higher-tensile straps or chains to resist braking forces.
  • Elongation: Stretch film provides elastic containment; strapping has low elongation and offers rigid restraint.
  • Environmental Resistance: UV and moisture-resistant materials perform better in coastal or long-haul intermodal service.


Cost Versus Performance Trade-offs

Decisions involve upfront material cost, labor to apply devices, and the cost of damage if inadequate securement is used. Examples:


  • Low-cost stretch wrap: Quick and cheap but may be insufficient for tall or heavy mixed loads without additional strapping.
  • High-strength polyester strap: Higher material cost and longer application time but significantly reduces load failure on long hauls.
  • Reusable equipment (load bars): Higher initial investment; lowers per-load cost for frequent same-route shipments.


Choosing For Retail Scenarios

Match devices to retail scenarios:


  • Short local moves: Heavy-duty stretch wrap and minimal strapping are often sufficient.
  • Multi-stop delivery routes: Use additional top straps or segmented load blocking to prevent shift during repeated stops.
  • Long-haul or intermodal: Combine polyester strapping, corner protection, and airbags or blocking for the highest reliability.


Maintenance, Inspection, And Reuse

Reusable devices—load bars, ratchet straps, and E-track fittings—require inspection and maintenance. Create a schedule to check for cuts, corrosion, and strap elasticity loss. Dispose of or replace damaged components promptly; worn securement is a common contributor to in-transit failures.


Practical Example: Seasonal High-Volume Electronics Shipment

A retailer shipping high-value electronics for peak season may face long hauls and high handling. Recommended securement: double-wrap pallets with pre-stretch film, apply polyester straps with edge protection, use pallet caps, and place pallets against load bars in the trailer. Though material and labor costs increase, damage reduction and customer satisfaction gains justify the investment.


  • Procurement tip: Buy consumables in bulk and standardize on a limited range of strap widths and film types to lower SKU complexity.
  • Operational tip: Pre-stage straps and corner boards at loading bays to reduce application time.
