Click-Through Rate Benchmarks For Product Ads Versus Brand Ads

Click-Through Rate

Definition

The percentage of impressions that result in a shopper clicking a product or advertisement.

Overview

Click-Through Rate The percentage of ad impressions that generate clicks. Benchmarks vary widely by ad format, placement, audience, and campaign objective.

Product-focused ads (shopping/product listing ads, dynamic product ads) and brand-focused campaigns (brand awareness display or video buys) typically show very different CTR profiles because user intent and creative formats differ. Knowing realistic benchmark ranges helps marketers set goals, allocate budget, and judge optimization progress.

Why Product And Brand Ads Diverge

Product ads target users who are often lower in the funnel and closer to purchase; the creative usually includes product image, price, and merchant name, which creates a strong action cue. Brand ads aim to increase reach and recall; they serve broader audiences where the primary goal is exposure, not immediate clicks. Ad format, placement (search vs. display), and targeting specificity explain most of the CTR differences.

Typical Benchmark Ranges

  • Product (Shopping/Dynamic Product Ads): Typical CTRs tend to be higher on search placements because intent is explicit; many accounts see single-digit percent CTRs for branded product queries and low single-digit for non-branded product searches.
  • Search Brand Text Ads: When a user searches a brand name, CTRs are often the highest — multiple percent up to double-digit percents for dominant brands in top positions.
  • Display Brand Awareness Ads: Display and video brand campaigns prioritize impressions and reach; CTRs are often low (fractions of a percent). Expect much lower raw CTR but measure success against view-through conversions or lift metrics.

How To Use Benchmarks To Set Targets

Benchmarks are a starting point, not an absolute. Set targets per campaign segment: separate branded search, generic search/product, remarketing, and prospecting display. Use historical account performance as the base, then layer on industry benchmarks and campaign goals. For product ads, aim to exceed historical CTRs for similar SKUs; for brand campaigns, focus on reach and engagement lift rather than raw CTR alone.

Measurement And Reporting Best Practices

  • Segment Metrics: Report CTR by placement, device, and query type (branded vs. non-branded).
  • Complement CTR With Outcome Metrics: Pair CTR with conversion rate and cost-per-acquisition (CPA) to see whether clicks generate value.
  • Use Relative Benchmarks: Compare product ads within the same category or price band for apples-to-apples insight.

Practical Example

A consumer electronics merchant noticed that product ads for accessories had CTRs below the account average while main product SKUs performed well. After splitting accessories into a dedicated campaign and adding promotional overlays (discount badges, free shipping text), accessory product CTRs improved and lowered CPA because the new creative matched buyer expectations better.

Tips For Narrowing The Gap

  • Match Creative To Intent: Product ads should surface price and availability; brand ads should emphasize memorable visuals and messaging aligned with the campaign’s awareness objective.
  • Use Audience Signals: For brand prospects, apply interest or demographic targeting; for product ads, use remarketing lists and in-market audiences to lift relevance.
  • Optimize Feed Data: For product ads, accurate titles, high-quality images, and structured attributes materially improve CTR.

In short, the Click-Through Rate for product ads and brand ads will typically differ because of intent and format. Use segmented benchmarks, focus product campaigns on relevance and feed quality, and measure brand campaigns with complementary lift metrics rather than raw CTR alone.
