Commodity Marking

Definition

Information printed, stenciled, or labeled on a carton or shipping unit to communicate commodity.

Overview

Commodity Marking is information printed, stenciled, or labeled on a carton or shipping unit to communicate commodity. In fulfillment centers the quality and consistency of those marks determine how quickly orders move from receiving to storage and then to shipping.

Best practices for commodity marking focus on standardization, readability, system integration, and durability. The goal is to make the commodity instantly identifiable to a picker, forklift operator, automated scanner, or carrier inspector while minimizing label-related exceptions that slow the flow. The following sections outline practical steps and sample rules you can adopt today.

Define A Standard Label Template

Create a single template (or a small set of templates) that covers all common scenarios: case, inner pack, and pallet. Each template should mandate placement, font sizes, required fields, and barcode symbology. Keep variations controlled—use a pallet template for mixed loads that includes a pallet contents summary and an SSCC barcode.

Required Elements And Why They Matter

  • Commodity Description: Human-readable name for quick visual confirmation during picking and staging.
  • SKU/GTIN: Precise identifier supporting WMS lookups and cross-referencing to purchase orders.
  • SSCC or Carton Serial: Unique carton or pallet serial for chain-of-custody and EDI scanning at carrier gates.
  • Quantity & Weight: Needed for staging, space planning, and carrier booking.
  • Handling Instructions: Icons or short phrases to prevent damage and ensure safe loading.

Barcodes And Data Formatting

Use GS1-compliant formats where trading partners expect them. GS1‑128 encoded SSCCs and GTINs are common for B2B and retail. Ensure barcodes have correct quiet zones, are printed at sufficient resolution, and are placed so handheld and fixed scanners can read them without repositioning cases or pallets.

Durability, Placement, And Redundancy

Choose label stock rated for expected conditions—cold storage, humidity, or abrasion—and place commodity marks on at least two adjacent sides of cartons and on both the face and side of pallets. For high-throughput lanes, add an additional peel-and-stick RFID tag or a second barcode in a contrasting location to reduce rescanning.

Integrate With WMS And Label Printing Systems

Drive labels from your WMS, ERP, or a dedicated label server so the printed commodity mark reflects the current transaction (ASN, PO, outbound order). Automate SSCC generation and maintain audit logs for printed labels. Where possible, print labels at the point of packing to eliminate manual transcription errors.

Quality Control And Auditing

Set up daily or weekly audits that check label readability, compliance with template fields, and barcode scannability. Track exceptions (bad print, wrong SKU, missing handling codes) and run root‑cause analyses—often a single misconfigured template or worn printer head causes repeated failures.

Training And Standard Operating Procedures

Document procedures for label creation, placement, and rejection. Train receiving clerks, packers, and floor supervisors on why commodity marks matter and how to handle non-conforming cases. Include pictorial examples of acceptable vs. unacceptable marks in the SOP to reduce interpretation variance.

Sample Quick Checklist For Implementation

  • Template Exists: Centralized label templates in the label server/WMS.
  • Required Fields Present: Commodity, SKU/GTIN, SSCC, qty, weight, handling codes.
  • Print Quality: Barcode verification implemented at printer.
  • Durability: Labels appropriate for environment (cold/humid/abrasive).
  • Redundancy: Marks on two sides and on the pallet face/side.

In short, the Commodity Marking practices you enforce shape operational reliability. Standardized templates, WMS integration, durable materials, and a simple audit program turn commodity marks from a paperwork task into a productivity lever for fulfillment centers.
