Deal Submission

Definition

The process of submitting an eligible product for consideration or participation in a promotional deal.

Overview

Deal Submission is the process of submitting an eligible product for consideration or participation in a promotional deal. Merchants must choose the promotion mechanism that fits product economics, inventory, and marketing goals—two common options are marketplace deal submissions and platform-level discount codes.

Choosing between submitting a product to a marketplace deal channel and running discount codes (or coupons) affects visibility, complexity, fulfillment planning, and cost. This article compares both approaches across common decision factors and gives guidance for which to use by scenario.

How The Two Promotion Types Differ

At a high level, marketplace deal slots are curated promotional placements (e.g., "Deal of the Day" or limited-time highlight placements). Discount codes are merchant-generated tools that lower the price for qualified customers but don’t guarantee placement.

  • Visibility: Deal submissions can appear in dedicated sections and often receive algorithmic boosts; discount codes rely on organic traffic, ads, or sharing to drive customers to use them.
  • Eligibility And Approval: Deal submissions often require platform approval and documentation; discount codes are typically created instantly by the merchant within the seller console.
  • Inventory Management: Deals frequently require reserved inventory for the promotional window; discount codes usually pull from general stock unless otherwise configured.
  • Cost Structure: Marketplaces may charge additional fees or have stricter fee stacks for featured deals; discount codes primarily affect gross margin without additional platform selection fees.

When To Use A Deal Submission

Deal submissions are preferable when the objective is rapid, scalable visibility and you can meet platform eligibility and inventory commitments. Use them when launching new products that need an initial sales spike, clearing seasonal inventory, or when advertising budget is limited but you want editorial placement.

  • High Visibility Need: Use deals when you want placement in marketplace deal hubs or homepage slots.
  • Predictable Inventory: Use deals when you can reserve and ship higher volumes without stockouts.
  • Brand Trust: Use deals if your brand is verified and you can meet documentation requirements quickly.

When To Use Discount Codes

Discount codes are better for targeted promotions, such as customer-retention offers, influencer campaigns, or segmented discounts (first-time buyers, newsletter subscribers). They are flexible, fast to implement, and useful when you want control over who receives the discount.

  • Audience Targeting: Use codes to reward specific customer groups or partners.
  • Operational Simplicity: Use codes when you cannot reserve inventory or meet marketplace deal requirements.
  • Promotion Testing: Use codes to A/B test price sensitivity with minimal platform friction.

Cost And Measurement Differences

Deal submissions often increase baseline traffic which can raise fulfillment volume and customer service load rapidly; measure uplift in sessions, conversion rate, and incremental margin after fees. Discount codes are easier to measure for CPA (cost per acquisition) when paired with tracked ad spend. For both, track net margin, sell-through rate, return rate, and repeat purchase rate to understand long-term value.

Decision Matrix (Quick Rules)

  • Rule 1: If you need immediate broad exposure and have the inventory, prefer a deal submission.
  • Rule 2: If you need precision, lower risk, or want to protect margin, prefer discount codes.
  • Rule 3: Combine both when appropriate: run a marketplace deal to drive traffic and offer a time-limited code to capture email signups or repeat purchases.

In short, the Deal Submission route gives curated visibility and often requires stricter operational commitments, while discount codes give control and targeting with lower platform friction. Choose based on visibility needs, inventory certainty, and margin tolerance.
