A merchant ships a lightweight lamp shade in a 20" × 20" × 8" box weighing 2 lb. Using a DIM divisor of 166, the DIM weight calculates to (20×20×8)/166 ≈ 19.3 lb, so the carrier bills as 20 lb. By switching to a 16" × 16" × 8" box the DIM weight drops significantly, lowering the parcel charge and saving cost per unit.
