Definitions And Key Distinctions


  • Dock-to-Stock Time: The elapsed time from arrival at the dock to the point when the units are recorded in the inventory system as available for use or sale.
  • Putaway Time: The time spent physically moving goods from staging at the dock into their storage location (shelving, rack, bin).
  • Receiving Time: Often refers to the time to unload and perform initial checks at the dock. It may or may not include putaway or posting steps.


Why The Distinction Matters


If you measure only putaway time, you may miss delays in documentation, QA, or system posting that prevent inventory from being available. Conversely, focusing solely on dock-to-stock without examining putaway may obscure inefficiencies in travel paths, slotting, or material handling equipment.


Common Measurement Methods


Measurement depends on the systems and operational practices available. Use precise timestamps captured in the WMS, mobile devices, or manual logs to get reliable metrics:

  • Start Point Options: Carrier offload completion, first scan at receiving, or gate-in timestamp.
  • End Point Options: WMS inventory posting, status flag set to "available", or final putaway scan at storage location.
  • Supplemental Data: Capture QA hold timestamps, ASN receipt, and exception handling events to segment causes of delay.


How To Report Both Metrics


Report dock-to-stock and putaway both separately and together to get an actionable view:

  • Separate KPIs: Display average and 95th percentile putaway time and dock-to-stock time by product family or supplier.
  • End-to-End View: Provide the total time and a waterfall breakdown showing receiving, QA, posting, and putaway durations.
  • Exception Rates: Report percentage of receipts that require rework, discrepancies, or quarantine as these inflate dock-to-stock.


When To Focus On Each Metric


Choose your improvement focus based on which part of the end-to-end process drives delays:

  • Focus On Putaway Time: If data shows long travel, repetitive forklift moves, or inefficient slotting.
  • Focus On Dock-to-Stock Time: If delays stem from missing ASNs, manual posting, quality holds, or system batch updates.
  • Combine Efforts: For operations with balanced problems across receiving and storage, optimize both in parallel with cross-functional teams.


Practical Example


Consider two DCs that both report average putaway of 2 hours. DC A posts inventory as soon as cartons are scanned at the dock, resulting in a dock-to-stock of 2 hours. DC B, however, batches posting to a once-per-shift update; even though physical putaway takes 2 hours, inventory isn’t available until the batch posts 4 hours later, so dock-to-stock equals 6 hours. Improvements for DC B should target posting frequency or real-time integration rather than putaway mechanics.


Tips For Accurate Measurement


  • Use System Timestamps: Rely on WMS and mobile device timestamps instead of paper logs to reduce error and latency.
  • Segment By Cause: Track time spent in QA, exception handling, or awaiting documentation separately for root-cause work.
  • Report Percentiles: Average time hides tail cases; report 90th/95th percentiles to surface worst-case delays.


In short, the Dock-to-Stock Time is a broader availability metric that includes receiving, QA, posting, and often putaway. Distinguishing it from putaway time and measuring both precisely enables targeted fixes—whether those fixes are process, system, staffing, or supplier-related.
