Dunnage insertion fills internal voids inside packages and between units to reduce micro-movement. Blocking and bracing use structural elements — dunnage boards, timber posts, or custom crates — to prevent macro-shifts of large items or pallet stacks.


How The Two Methods Work


Dunnage insertion is about cushioning and small-scale stabilization: cushioning fragile items inside cartons, using air pillows to keep items separated, or using corrugate partitions. Blocking and bracing are about creating a rigid interface between cargo and transport equipment — for example, nailing timber blocks to a crate floor or adding corrugated braces inside an LTL trailer to prevent pallet sliding.


When Dunnage Insertion Is The Right Choice


  • Small To Medium Items: Lightweight consumer goods, electronics, and apparel that need cushion rather than structural restraint.
  • Multiple Small Packages: Cases with many loose items where internal fill prevents product-to-product damage.
  • Dimensional Weight Sensitivity: Use low-density dunnage (air pillows) when minimizing freight cost is important.


When Blocking And Bracing Is Preferable


  • Heavy Machinery: Items with concentrated mass that can shift and catastrophically damage a load or trailer.
  • High-Stack Pallets: Tall pallet stacks at risk of tipping during transit.
  • Intermodal And Ocean Shipments: Long transit times and multiple handling steps make rigid restraint critical.


Material Comparisons And Performance


Evaluate materials for expected load types. Foam and air pillows excel at shock absorption but compress under sustained load; corrugate and timber support lateral loads and stacking but provide minimal cushioning. For combined threats use both: dunnage insertion inside cartons for cushion and blocking/bracing on the pallet for structural restraint.


Regulatory And Carrier Considerations


Carriers and insurers sometimes require specific blocking or bracing for certain lanes—especially for full-container loads or oversized items. Export packaging standards may require certified timber for dunnage blocks; likewise, wood dunnage often needs ISPM-15 treatment for international shipments. Check carrier rules for floor loading patterns and tie-down requirements in trailers or containers.


Cost And Operational Trade-Offs


Blocking and bracing tend to be material- and labor-intensive; they may require carpentry skills and more time at the dock. Dunnage insertion is usually faster and lower cost per unit but may not prevent catastrophic movement of heavy items. Use damage-cost analysis to choose the cheapest effective solution: higher upfront packaging costs are often justified when product value and damage risk are high.


Practical Implementation Scenarios


Scenario 1: Light consumer electronics shipped LTL — use dunnage insertion with molded foam inserts and corrugate partitions to prevent internal impact.


Scenario 2: Industrial pump exported in a 20' container — use blocking and bracing with timber chocks and steel strapping, plus internal foam pads to protect mounting brackets from vibration.


Inspection, Documentation, And Testing


Document the selected method in pack specs and include photos of correct blocking/bracing or dunnage insertion. Use vibration and compression testing for unusual or expensive shipments. Before carrier pickup, inspect pallets for movement by applying lateral force and checking for slip; secure with banding or shrink wrap as required.
