Dynamic Routing is routing that adjusts based on real-time conditions such as traffic, order volume, driver availability, or delivery exceptions. Comparing it to static routing — fixed routes planned in advance and seldom changed — helps fleets decide when investment in dynamic systems delivers ROI versus when static plans suffice.
Static routing is simple: build routes, print manifests, dispatch. It works well for predictable, repetitive runs with few exceptions, such as fixed-line distribution between DCs or consistent B2B deliveries with appointment windows. Dynamic routing shines in variable environments: customer deliveries with unpredictable order volumes, urban last-mile with frequent traffic variation, or fleets that must absorb same-day orders and exceptions.

For stable linehaul or dedicated-route services, static routing can remain the most cost-effective approach.

A regional grocery distributor with fixed store deliveries and scheduled appointments may use static routing for its linehaul and store drops: predictable stops, constrained by receiving windows. The same company’s direct-to-consumer ecommerce arm, making thousands of urban deliveries with late-hour order influx, benefits from dynamic routing — reducing miles and improving on-time delivery by constantly reassigning late orders and rerouting around congestion.
In short, the Dynamic Routing approach trades complexity and integration cost for flexibility and operational responsiveness. Choose dynamic routing when variability, customer service levels, and exception rates make static plans prohibitively costly or impractical; stick with static routing when predictability and low complexity outweigh the benefits of live optimization.
