Edge Protectors

Definition

Rigid or semi-rigid pieces made of cardboard, plastic, or composite used at corners and edges of palletized goods to distribute strap pressure and prevent product damage from tightening and impact.

Overview

Edge Protectors Protective strips or angles placed along edges to distribute pressure and reduce crushing or abrasion.

Edge protectors interact differently with stretch wrap and strap-based load securement. Understanding these interactions helps operations choose the right combination to keep pallets intact while controlling materials cost and handling time. This article outlines the advantages and limitations of edge protectors when used with stretch film and with strapping systems, and gives practical recommendations for mixed environments.

How Edge Protectors Work With Strapping

Strapping applies a concentrated compression force where the band contacts the load. Edge protectors distribute that force across a wider area to prevent strap-bite, corner crush, and case puncture. For high-tension polyester or steel strapping, robust edge protectors are essential to protect carton integrity.

  • Force Distribution: Properly sized protectors reduce local pressure and lower the chance of case rupture under tensioned straps.
  • Strap Seat Stability: Stiff protectors prevent strap edges from digging into the load and can increase strap friction to reduce slippage.
  • Sizing Need: Wide straps require wider protectors; film-based light strapping may not require heavy protection.

How Edge Protectors Work With Stretch Wrap

Stretch film secures a pallet by creating hoop tension around the load. Edge protectors are less essential for film-only containment because film tensions uniformly around the load rather than localizing force. However, protectors still add value in several cases:

  • Preventing Abrasion: Edge protectors shield carton corners and edges from abrasion caused by film movement during transit or when pallets are banded across loads after wrapping.
  • Stacking Support: Stiffer protectors provide vertical edge support when multiple pallets are stacked in storage or on a container.

Advantages Of Combining Methods

  • Redundancy: Using both strapping with edge protectors and stretch wrap reduces the likelihood of load shift—wrap holds corners and small pieces while straps lock the load to the pallet.
  • Damage Reduction: Edge protectors under straps plus stretch wrap reduces both strap-bite and film abrasion, especially for mixed-SKU or uneven pallet faces.
  • Compliance: Multi-method securement helps meet stricter carrier or modal securing requirements for long-haul and intermodal shipments.

Limitations And Risks

  • Increased Materials And Labor: Adding protectors increases packing material count and application time—consider automation or pre-cut lengths to reduce labor.
  • Film Tear Points: Rigid protectors can create abrasion points against film during transit if not seated flush, causing premature film failure.
  • Dimensional And Weight Impact: Thick or metal profiles add weight and may push a pallet over carrier dimensional or weight breaks, which is a concern for parcel shipments.

Practical Recommendations

  • For Heavy, High-Tension Straps: Always use edge protectors sized for strap width and tension. Prefer continuous protectors aligned beneath straps.
  • For Film-Only Loads: Use corner boards or narrow edge protectors if cartons are fragile; otherwise, prioritize film quality and wrap patterns to maintain stability.
  • For Mixed Systems: If both wrap and straps are used, seat protectors so that film wraps over the protector edges to reduce film abrasion and preserve film integrity.
  • For Automation: Standardize protector length and location in the packing BOM; consider automatic applicators or slitting tools to speed application.

Case Example

A 1,500 kg pallet of blended consumer goods is wrapped for export and strapped for securement. The operation applies 50 mm kraft edge protectors under two polyester straps and uses a six-wrap pattern of pre-stretch film at 200% stretch. The protectors prevent strap impression into thin-walled produce cartons while the film keeps smaller items tight against the load. The combined system reduced claims for corner crush and film failure on intermodal lanes by 60% in a 90-day trial.

Operational Tips

  • Inspect Protectors: Before application, check protectors for splits, delamination, or damage that would negate their protective function.
  • Recycle Or Return: For plastic or metal protectors, create a return loop to recoup value and reduce waste.
  • Document Standards: Include precise protector specs in packing lists and carrier-facing paperwork to avoid disputes over insufficient packaging.

In short, the Edge Protectors choice relative to stretch wrap and strapping depends on load fragility, strap tension, and transport mode. Edge protectors are essential when straps generate concentrated pressure; with stretch wrap they add abrasion resistance and stacking support. Use standardized sizing, validate with trials, and design handling and recovery processes to maximize benefit and control cost.
