Overview

EDI Testing is the process of verifying that trading partners can send, receive, and process required EDI documents correctly. A checklist-driven approach helps teams cover connectivity, format validation, business rules and performance so integrations move to production without surprises.


Pre-Test Preparations


Before any transmission, agree on the basics: EDI standard and version (e.g., ANSI X12 3010/004010), document types to exchange (850, 856, 810), partner identifiers (GLN, DUNS, or ISA/GS IDs), test environment endpoints, and security requirements (AS2 certificate, SFTP keys, TLS versions). Create test accounts in ERP/WMS and ensure sandbox data mirrors production structure for SKUs, carriers and locations.


Connectivity And Security Checks


  • Label: Verify DNS, firewall and VPN settings so traffic flows between endpoints.
  • Label: Complete certificate exchange and test AS2 MDN handshakes or SFTP logins.
  • Label: Test transport encryption and authentication (TLS versions, cipher suites, key expiry checks).


Message Format And Mapping Tests


Run sample messages through mapping engines and validate both interchange and transaction set structure. Check segment terminators and element separators match partner expectations. Validate mandatory/conditional segments and data element lengths. Use a mix of test cases: typical orders, maximum line items, and intentionally malformed messages to confirm proper rejection and error reporting.


Business-Rule Validation


  • Label: Confirm that SKU/UPC/GTIN lookups succeed and mappings use correct warehouse product codes.
  • Label: Validate pricing, tax logic and payment terms against PO and invoice flows.
  • Label: Ensure ASN-to-PO matching rules are enforced and receiving tolerances (weight, quantity variances) behave as expected.


Acknowledgements, Errors And Exception Handling


Validate that partners return expected acknowledgments (997/FA) and that negative acknowledgments trigger the correct business process. Confirm automated retries, alerting, and escalation paths. Test common error cases: missing PO number, invalid item code, negative quantity, and mismatched buyer/seller IDs. Logging should capture envelope, transaction, and mapping errors with clear traceability.


Volume And Performance Tests


Test with realistic volumes and peak loads to surface throughput and latency issues. A small sample might pass but high-volume bursts can cause mapping timeouts, queue backlogs or database contention in ERP/WMS. Measure end-to-end times: from transport receipt to ERP posting and acknowledgment generation. Set SLA targets for each stage.


Go-Live Criteria


  • Label: Successful connectivity tests and AS2/SFTP handshakes without errors.
  • Label: All document types validated through mapping and ERP/WMS posting in staging.
  • Label: Acknowledgment flows (997, 855) return expected statuses for test cases.
  • Label: Performance metrics meet agreed SLAs under simulated production load.


Post-Go-Live Monitoring And Rollback Plans


Monitor the first production transactions closely with alerts for missing acknowledgments or mapping failures. Keep a rollback plan if critical business documents fail: pause production feed, switch to alternate communication channel, or revert to manual order submission temporarily. Capture lessons learned to refine the checklist for subsequent partners.


Practical Example Checklist (Sample)


  • Label: Exchange identifiers and endpoint URLs with partner.
  • Label: Complete AS2 certificate exchange and test MDN receipt.
  • Label: Send a test 850; confirm 997 and 855 responses.
  • Label: Send a test 856; verify ASN mapping into WMS and carton data visibility.
  • Label: Send a test 810 and confirm invoice posting and payment term handling.
  • Label: Perform a high-volume run to validate throughput and error handling.
