TMS platforms support both but often integrate with last-mile delivery apps for the final leg.
Who Pays And Contracting Considerations
Responsibility for first mile charges is usually defined in the sale or purchase terms (FOB origin vs. FOB destination). Shippers frequently pay first mile charges to ensure timely pickup and control over consolidation. For the last mile, the seller, retailer, or marketplace typically budgets delivery costs, sometimes passing them to the customer. Contracts should include accessorial rules, minimums, and performance SLAs tailored to each leg’s realities.
Practical Example
A food importer moves frozen pallets from a port to a cold storage warehouse (first mile). The operation prioritizes drayage appointments, temperature-controlled equipment, and accurate temperature logs. Conversely, when those pallets later move to retail stores (last mile), the priorities switch to timed store deliveries, dock appointment sequencing, and carrier penalties for missed windows.
