Next, integrate FNSKU labels into your packing line: batch print labels per SKU, apply them to individual units, and perform a scan validation. Lastly, confirm the labeled units are packed into cartons with matching shipment IDs and packing lists.

Use reliable printing and scanning tools to reduce failures. A basic equipment list includes a thermal label printer (Zebra, Brother), 203–300 dpi labels matched to Amazon specs, handheld barcode scanners for validation, label dispensers or applicators for higher volumes, and packing stations with flat surfaces for application. If print volume is high, semi-automated applicators reduce labor and position labels consistently.

Implement a QC sampling plan: scan every label on a random 1–5% sample of units per SKU, and 100% scan for high-value or high-risk items. Capture scan results in your WMS or a spreadsheet with timestamped entries. For high-volume operations consider a final-scan station where each unit is scanned and accepted into the outbound carton by the operator; this reduces inbound exceptions at Amazon’s FC.


Dealing With Problematic Packaging


Packaging materials like metallic films, frosted bags, or thermal-sensitive inks may cause label failure. In those cases, add a paper backing or affix a small rigid card with the label applied. For shrink-wrapped multipacks, place the label on the outer wrap where it will remain visible after palletization. If a manufacturer UPC must remain visible, place the FNSKU so both codes are scannable without overlap.

Factor in machine setup, scanning checks, and reworks. If Amazon charges for labeling at the FC, compare per-unit fees to your internal labor costs — third-party prep centers may offer cost advantages when volumes are variable.


Exception Handling And Label Corrections


If Amazon rejects units due to unreadable FNSKUs, they may either relabel and charge you or reject the shipment. Keep photographic evidence and scan logs to dispute incorrect charges. For units already in your inventory, correct FNSKU labels should be applied before shipping replacements. Maintain a small stock of pre-printed FNSKU labels for fast rework in case Amazon changes labeling requirements mid-cycle.

A consumer electronics seller sets up two packing lanes. Lane A handles small accessories and uses manual applicators with a 1-operator scan station; Lane B handles bulkier items with an automated label applicator and an integrated scanner that logs each scan via the WMS.
