GB EORI vs EU EORI: How They Differ After Brexit

GB EORI Number

Definition

An EORI beginning with GB that is generally needed to import goods into or export goods from Great Britain.

Overview

GB EORI Number An EORI beginning with GB that is generally needed to import goods into or export goods from Great Britain. That single-line definition frames the key distinction: a GB EORI is the UK-specific version of the Economic Operators Registration and Identification scheme, and it functions differently from EORI numbers issued by EU member states since the UK is no longer in the EU customs union.

The practical divergence between a GB EORI and an EU EORI centers on jurisdiction, systems access, and legal obligations. An EU EORI (for example, FR, DE, or NL prefix) allows access to EU customs systems and is used for trade with EU member states. A GB EORI is recognised by UK customs systems and HMRC and is therefore required for customs formalities in Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales). When shipments cross the UK border, having the correctly jurisdictional EORI is as important as the accuracy of commodity codes or valuation.

Legal And Systems Differences

EU and GB customs systems operate separately. Declarations lodged in the UK require GB registration and validation through HMRC processes. Conversely, imports into the EU are processed under EU member-state authorities. This affects electronic filing, duty and VAT treatment, and controls for regulated goods (e.g., chemicals, foodstuffs): the controlling authority will only accept its own EORI prefix for responsibility and audit trails.

How This Affects Trade Flows

For businesses trading across the channel, the immediate effect is that both EORIs may be needed depending on where responsibilities lie in the supply chain. Examples:

  • UK Importer/EU Exporter: The UK importer must provide a GB EORI for HMRC declarations; the EU exporter will use its EU EORI for export formalities in the EU.
  • Transit Through The EU To GB: Additional declarations and possibly both EORI entries appear in documentation when goods transit multiple jurisdictions.
  • Third-Country (e.g., US) Shipments: A US exporter does not automatically get an EU or GB EORI but will rely on their agent or the importer to provide the correct EORI for the destination.

Operational Consequences For Logistics Providers

Carriers and 3PLs must ensure that the declaration they lodge uses the EORI of the party that is legally responsible for the import or export. Using the wrong EORI can cause system rejections, cargo holds, and misapplied duty or VAT charges. Operationally, this means integrating EORI checks into onboarding data, manifest creation, and customs entry templates in your WMS/TMS.

When You Need Both Numbers

Scenarios that commonly require both a GB and an EU EORI include cross-border fulfilment networks and drop-shipping models where goods are moved from an EU warehouse into Great Britain, or vice versa. Some traders maintain both registrations to simplify returns, repairs, or bonded operations across jurisdictions. Maintaining both EORIs is a valid strategy when business operations span the UK and EU and when the trader acts as importer or exporter in those markets.

Practical Checklist

  • Identify Jurisdiction: Confirm whether your customs activity will be processed by HMRC (GB) or an EU member state.
  • Assign Responsibility: Agree who is importer/exporter of record in contracts and commercial invoices.
  • Register Early: Apply for the appropriate EORI before the first shipment to avoid clearance delays.

In short, the GB EORI Number is the UK-specific customs identifier that replaced the automatic use of EU EORIs for transactions with Great Britain. Understanding which EORI applies to each leg of a movement is essential to prevent rejected declarations and border delays after Brexit.
