GTIN-14 Case Marking

Definition

A case-level product identifier represented as a 14-digit GTIN and commonly encoded in an ITF-14 or GS1-128 barcode.

Overview

GTIN-14 Case Marking A case-level product identifier represented as a 14-digit GTIN and commonly encoded in an ITF-14 or GS1-128 barcode.

GTIN-14 case marking ties the logical identity of a packed trade item (a case, carton, or multipack) to a machine-readable barcode that supply-chain partners can scan during receiving, storage, and shipping. The 14-digit GTIN communicates the product variant and packaging level; the barcode symbology (most often ITF-14 or GS1-128) carries that number on the physical case for automated capture at dock doors, conveyors, or handheld scanners.

What The Marking Covers

GTIN-14 case-marking specifies the following elements that appear on the case label or directly printed packaging:

  • GTIN-14 Number: The full 14-digit identifier including packaging indicator, GS1 Company Prefix, item reference, and check digit.
  • Barcode Symbology: ITF-14 for traditional case-barcode use or GS1-128 when additional data (lot, serial, expiration) or GS1 Application Identifiers are required.
  • Human-Readable Formatting: The numeric GTIN printed below the barcode and common layout features (quiet zones, barcode height, orientation).

Why It Matters For Fulfillment

Using a standard GTIN-14 Case Marking reduces errors and speeds processing across multiple touch points. When warehouses, carriers, and retailers scan a case barcode they pull consistent item and pack-level data into WMS, TMS, and ERP systems—enabling accurate putaway, pick planning, cross-docking, and automated ASN reconciliation. Consistent case marking also supports regulatory traceability and chargeback prevention with retail customers that require GS1 identifiers.

How The Encoding Usually Works

Most operations follow these encoding patterns:

  • ITF-14: Encodes only the 14-digit GTIN in a low-density, robust matrix suited to corrugated cartons; preferred for retail cases without extra data.
  • GS1-128: Encodes the GTIN plus optional Application Identifiers (AIs) such as batch/lot (AI 10), production/pack date (AI 11/13), and serial numbers (AI 21). Used when downstream partners need additional traceability or regulatory fields.
  • Check Digit: The 14th digit is a computed check digit per GS1 rules; barcode generators and label software handle this automatically when given the base GTIN data.

Who Assigns And Who Uses The GTIN-14

The GTIN-14 is derived from a base GTIN assigned by the brand owner or manufacturer (the party that holds the GS1 Company Prefix). Packaging hierarchy and packaging indicator digits are decided by the brand owner. Downstream users—3PLs, retailers, carriers, and distribution centers—scan and act on the case marking but do not reassign GTINs.

How It Varies By Industry And Partner

Retail, grocery, pharmaceuticals, and industrial customers often have bespoke label placement, minimum barcode grade, and data requirements. For example, grocery chains commonly accept ITF-14 on outer cases but require GS1-128 with lot and expiry for perishables or pharmaceuticals. Always confirm retailer or distributor GS1 labeling guides before finalizing case labels.

Practical Example: Simple Pack Case Labeling

A manufacturer packs 24 units of SKU 12345 into a carton. They derive a GTIN-14 that reflects the 24-pack packaging level, generate an ITF-14 barcode on the case, print the GTIN below it, and apply a shipping label showing the carton GTIN, PO number, and pallet ID. At the retailer DC, receiving staff scan the ITF-14, which populates the inbound ASN match and automates putaway planning for the 24-unit cartons.

Tips For Implementation

  • Validate Early: Use a barcode verifier to confirm symbol grade (ISO/IEC 15416 standard) before shipping to major customers.
  • Match Partner Specs: Maintain a library of customer label requirements (placement, quiet zone, minimum symbol height) in your WMS or labeling system.
  • Prefer GS1-128 If You Need Data: Choose GS1-128 when you must carry additional AIs like lot or expiry—ITF-14 cannot carry those in the symbol.
  • Automate Generation: Integrate GTIN-14 generation into your ERP or labeling software to avoid manual errors and ensure correct check digits and packaging indicators.

In short, the GTIN-14 Case Marking is the standardized bridge between a case’s logical product identity and the physical barcode scanned across the supply chain—implement it according to GS1 rules, validate symbol quality, and match customer labeling expectations to prevent exceptions and speed fulfillment.
