Amazon 3PL

Definition

A third-party logistics provider that supports Amazon sellers with FBM, FBA prep, storage, or multichannel fulfillment.

Overview

Amazon 3PL — a third-party logistics provider that supports Amazon sellers with FBM, FBA prep, storage, or multichannel fulfillment — runs operational processes and systems explicitly designed to meet Amazon’s inbound rules while also servicing alternate sales channels. Their workflows center on accuracy, traceability, and fast turnaround so sellers meet Amazon KPIs and customer expectations across channels.

Operational success requires a WMS configured for Amazon logic, trained staff who understand FNSKU and prep requirements, and QA checks that prevent rejections. Amazon 3PLs typically maintain SOPs for every inbound and outbound operation: receiving, quarantine, inspection, unit prep, cartonization for shipments to Amazon, palletization, carrier selection, and EDI/API confirmations.

Receiving And Inspection

At intake, 3PLs verify purchase order quantities, check for damage, and update inventory with lot or serial traces if required. Many 3PLs offer temperature-controlled receiving for items that need cold-chain management, and some provide customs brokerage coordination for imported goods.

FBA Prep And Labeling Workflows

FBA prep is process-driven. Typical steps include unit inspection, applying FNSKU labels or manufacturer barcodes as requested, polybagging with suffocation warnings, bubble wrapping, taping, and aggregating units into Amazon-compliant cartons and pallets. Quality control often includes barcode scans at each step and photographic evidence for higher-value SKUs.

Multichannel Fulfillment Setup

Multichannel fulfillment requires inventory visibility and allocation rules. 3PLs can hold a pool of inventory and split pick lanes depending on channel SLA — expedited for direct-to-consumer webstore orders and economy for B2B shipments. This avoids double-counting inventory while optimizing carrier selection per channel.

Returns And Disposition

Amazon 3PLs manage returns with disposition workflows: restock, refurbish, return to vendor, recycle, or dispose. They often integrate return authorizations with merchant portals and provide detailed reports on reasons for returns, which helps merchants refine listings and packaging.

Technology And Reporting

  • WMS Integration: Core for item-level tracking, FIFO/LIFO rules, hold management, and replenishment triggers.
  • API/EDI Connections: Automate order flows from Amazon, Shopify, marketplaces, and ERPs; return confirmations and tracking updates automatically pass back to channels.
  • Analytics: Service-level reporting on order cycle time, pick accuracy, inbound QA failure rates, and inventory aging.

Compliance, QA, And Risk Management

Because Amazon rejects non-compliant inbound shipments, 3PLs enforce QA at multiple checkpoints: carton weight/size checks, barcode readability, and packaging integrity. For regulated goods (hazmat, food, supplements), Amazon 3PLs coordinate necessary certifications and storage protocols. Insurance and clear liability terms are critical parts of the contract to manage shrinkage and transit risk.

Operational Example

A beauty brand sends an LTL shipment to an Amazon 3PL. The 3PL receives, inspects for leaks, assigns lot numbers, performs label application per Amazon FNSKU rules, assembles cartons to Amazon’s pack specifications, and books a carrier to ship multiple replenishment cartons to Amazon fulfillment centers. Simultaneously, the 3PL holds a portion of inventory for direct-to-consumer orders and routes those via an eCommerce carrier partner.

Best Practices For Working With An Amazon 3PL

  • Documented SOPs: Require written processes for FBA prep, quarantines, and returns prior to onboarding.
  • Test Shipments: Start with small pilot shipments to validate labeling and inbound acceptance before large transfers.
  • Service-Level Agreements: Define pick accuracy, turnaround time, and inventory reconciliation frequency in the contract.
  • Regular Audits: Schedule cycle counts and third-party audits to ensure ongoing compliance.

In short, the Amazon 3PL operates as an extension of the seller’s fulfillment engine — combining tight process controls, Amazon-specific prep, and multichannel capability so merchants can scale without sacrificing compliance or speed.
