Corporation Income Tax Account (RC)

Definition

The CRA program account used for Canadian corporation income-tax administration.

Overview

Corporation Income Tax Account (RC) is the CRA program account used for Canadian corporation income-tax administration. In practice the RC account is the routing anchor CRA uses to receive T2 filings, match electronic and mailed payments, schedule instalment obligations, and manage assessments and notices for corporate taxpayers.

Operationally, finance teams, tax preparers, and payroll departments use the RC account when completing corporate tax workflows. Whether you file electronically using certified tax software and transmit a T2 return, or you mail a paper T2, the RC account identifier ensures the filing is posted to the correct corporate tax file. Similarly, when you remit tax payments (including instalments), you reference the RC account so the payment reduces the corporation's outstanding balance rather than being applied to a different account.

Typical Filing And Payment Actions Against An RC Account

  • Annual T2 Filing: The corporation's annual T2 return is filed under the RC account; assessments, reassessments and notices reference the RC number.
  • Instalment Remittances: Corporations required to pay instalments use the RC identifier on the remittance; the CRA tracks instalment history per RC account.
  • Balance Payments: End-of-year balances payable are applied to the RC account and reduce the recorded liability under that account.
  • Correspondence & Objections: All formal CRA correspondence about corporate tax — including reassessment notices and notices of objection — reference the RC account.

Integration With Online Services

The CRA's online services (My Business Account and Represent a Client) surface RC account details such as filing history, outstanding balances, and instalment schedules. Authorized representatives — tax firms or internal finance staff — must link their CRA user access to the specific RC account to act on behalf of the corporation. For 3PLs or warehouse operators managing multiple corporate entities, accurate account linkage avoids cross-entity access mistakes.

Payment Channels And References

Payments toward an RC account can be made via online banking, the CRA's My Payment service, electronic funds transfer (EFT), or through third-party remitters. Each payment channel requires the full BN + program identifier + suffix. For example, electronic banking will ask for "123456789RC0001" as the reference. Using incomplete or incorrect references can result in delayed application, interest charges, or the appearance that taxes remain unpaid.

Coordinating Multiple Entities And Subsidiaries

Large logistics groups and multi-entity merchants commonly have several BNs and RC accounts — one for each incorporated legal entity. That structure keeps liabilities and filings separate. When corporate restructuring occurs (mergers, amalgamations, or wind-ups), the RC accounts may be closed or reconciled; CRA requires notification and may require final filings against the old RC account and new filings under the surviving BN and RC.

Practical Tips For Finance Teams

  • Verify the full account format: Confirm the full BN + RC suffix before scheduling payments or filing returns to prevent misapplication.
  • Centralize credentials: Keep CRA My Business Account credentials and representative authorizations stored securely and updated after staff changes.
  • Monitor instalments: Use the RC account's instalment schedule to avoid missed payments and interest; set calendar reminders tied to the RC reference.
  • Reconcile monthly: Reconcile CRA statements to your ledger by RC account so corporate balances are accurate across legal entities.

In short, the Corporation Income Tax Account (RC) is the CRA program account used for Canadian corporation income-tax administration and is the primary reference for filing T2 returns, making payments, and managing corporate tax obligations. Accurate use of the RC identifier ensures filings and payments are applied promptly and to the correct legal entity.
