Search Keyword

Definition

A word or phrase used to help a product appear for relevant shopper searches.

Overview

Search Keyword A word or phrase used to help a product appear for relevant shopper searches. Choosing the right search keywords requires combining product attributes with shopper intent and channel-specific rules to maximize discoverability and conversion.

Keyword selection is a repeatable process: research, prioritize, place, measure, and iterate. Effective keywords are specific enough to match the right shoppers and broad enough to capture common phrasing. The goal is to attract buyers who have intent and match product fit—traffic without intent or relevance wastes impressions and harms conversion metrics.

Step 1 — Research Shopper Language

Begin by collecting real shopper queries. Use marketplace search-terms reports, Google Search Console for brand sites, site-search logs, and third-party keyword tools. Group queries by intent (research, comparison, purchase-ready) and by product attribute (brand, model, material, size).

Step 2 — Prioritize Keywords By Intent And Volume

  • High Priority: Purchase-intent phrases with sufficient volume (e.g., "best waterproof hiking jacket men").
  • Medium Priority: Attribute-driven queries that indicate fit (e.g., "waterproof breathable jacket size large").
  • Long-Tail: Specific, lower-volume phrases that convert well but require fewer competitors (e.g., "lightweight Gore‑Tex hiking jacket").

Step 3 — Map Keywords To Listing Fields

Different fields are weighted differently by platforms. Use this mapping principle:

  • Title/Primary Field: Put the single highest-priority keyword plus essential attributes (brand, model, size).
  • Bullet Points/Feature Fields: Include secondary keywords and purchase-relevant modifiers (material, fit, warranty).
  • Backend/Search Terms: Add variants, synonyms, misspellings, and secondary phrases not shown on the front end but allowed by the channel.

Step 4 — Avoid Common Mistakes

  • Keyword Stuffing: Repeating words or filling fields with irrelevant phrases reduces readability and can trigger penalties.
  • Mismatched Intent: Don’t optimize a product page for discovery phrases if the product cannot satisfy the intent (e.g., promote a non-waterproof jacket with waterproof keywords).
  • Ignoring Channel Rules: Some marketplaces restrict certain content in titles or backend terms—follow guidelines to prevent suppression.

Step 5 — Measure And Iterate

Track impressions, click-through rate, conversion rate, and buy box share for keyword-led changes. Use A/B tests of titles and bullets where platforms allow. Remove or de-prioritize keywords that bring high impressions but low conversion, and expand successful phrases into new campaigns or product bundles.

Practical Tips For Scaling Across Hundreds Of SKUs

  • Templates: Create title and bullet templates that concatenate brand + model + primary attribute + size to ensure consistency.
  • Attribute Taxonomy: Maintain a master spreadsheet of standardized attribute values to avoid fragmented synonyms (e.g., "color: navy" vs "navy blue").
  • Automation: Use feed management or WMS-to-channel integrations to populate structured fields and keep backend search terms synchronized.

In short, the Search Keyword selection process combines shopper language, product attributes, channel rules, and continuous measurement. A methodical approach—research, prioritize, map, and iterate—scales from single SKUs to large catalogs and materially improves discoverability and conversion when implemented consistently.
