UN 3481 Marking

Definition

The UN identification marking for lithium ion batteries packed with or contained in equipment.

Overview

UN 3481 Marking The UN identification marking for lithium ion batteries packed with or contained in equipment.

Applying the UN 3481 Marking correctly is a practical, repeatable process that combines accurate classification, durable marking, and the right supporting paperwork. Warehouse teams, packers, and shipping clerks should use a stepwise approach so every carton that contains or is packed with lithium ion batteries leaves the dock compliant and visible to carriers.

Step 1 — Confirm Classification

Verify whether the batteries are "contained in equipment" (installed), "packed with equipment" (in same outer package but not installed), or shipped alone. Use SKU data or a quick physical check. Record the battery type (lithium ion), cell/battery watt-hour rating or lithium content, and number of batteries per package — these details determine allowed exceptions and marking requirements.

Step 2 — Determine Applicable Regulations

Decide which regulatory rules apply: domestic ground (49 C.F.R.) or international air (ICAO/IATA). Air shipments typically require stricter compliance. Consult the relevant regulation sections for exceptions — for example, certain small batteries packed with equipment qualify for limited exemptions but still require UN 3481 marking and possibly operator notification.

Step 3 — Prepare The Package

Package to prevent movement and short circuits. Use inner cushioning to prevent contact between terminals, ensure devices are blocked and braced, and protect against crushing. For packed-with-equipment shipments, keep batteries separated from conductive items and provide adequate insulation or individual inner packaging when required.

Step 4 — Apply The Marking And Other Labels

  • Marking Content: Print "UN 3481" clearly. Where required, include the lithium battery handling icon or the full statement "Lithium ion batteries packed with equipment" or "Lithium ion batteries contained in equipment."
  • Label Size And Durability: Use a label size that is legible from a reasonable distance on the pallet or carton; use durable inks and adhesives rated for transport conditions.
  • Placement: Affix the marking on the largest outer surface area. Avoid corners, seams, and overwrap that could obscure the label. Do not cover the marking with carrier or pallet labels.
  • Supplemental Labels: Add handling labels if required by the mode (e.g., lithium battery handling label for air shipments), and ensure any orientation arrows or fragile labels do not conflict with safety information.

Step 5 — Create And Include Documentation

Include the appropriate shipping papers. For air shipments, a shipper's declaration for dangerous goods may be required unless the shipment qualifies for an exception that only requires the UN 3481 marking plus a description on the air waybill. For surface shipments, include a clear description on the bill of lading and any carrier-specific forms. Retain copies for your records.

Step 6 — Carrier Notification And Acceptance

Some air carriage exceptions require operator notification — inform the airline in advance and provide any required documentation. At tender, carrier acceptance staff will visually inspect the package, the marking, and documentation. Have a pre-tender checklist to reduce rejection risk.

Checklist For Pack Stations

  • Confirm Battery Status: SKU flagged in WMS as contained/packed with equipment.
  • Weight And Dimensions: Record to ensure correct quantity limits and labeling sizes.
  • Printed Label: UN 3481 applied, durable, unobstructed.
  • Documentation: Shipping papers included and copy saved in the TMS/WMS.
  • Photos: Optional — take photo of marked package for audit trails and carrier disputes.

Handling Special Cases

For mixed pallets containing both UN 3480 and UN 3481 packages, segregate and label accordingly. Some carriers will not accept mixed pallets unless each parcel is individually marked and documented. For international exports, check destination-country requirements; additional language or documentation may be required for customs clearance.

Common Operational Problems And Fixes

  • Problem: Labels covered by stretch wrap at palletisation. Fix: Apply a master label on an exposed side of the pallet and ensure carton labels remain visible.
  • Problem: Inconsistent label formats across SKUs. Fix: Standardize label templates in your label software with mandatory fields for UN number and handling icon.
  • Problem: Missing shipper's declaration for air shipments. Fix: Integrate a regulatory checklist into the booking process and block air tender until declaration is attached.

In short, the UN 3481 Marking must be applied as part of a controlled workflow: classify the battery configuration, pack to required standards, place a durable and visible UN 3481 label, include correct documentation, and confirm carrier acceptance. Clear procedures, training, and WMS/TMS integration reduce risk and keep shipments moving.
