Mixed-SKU Pallet

Definition

A pallet containing more than one SKU.

Overview

Mixed-SKU Pallet A pallet containing more than one SKU. Building mixed-SKU pallets requires deliberate rules for pallet engineering, labeling, and verification to ensure safety, inventory accuracy, and carrier acceptance. Best practices minimize damage, counting errors, and outbound exceptions.

Start with pallet construction rules: heavy, stable items should form the base; lighter, fragile items belong on top. Use slip sheets, interlayers, and corner boards to distribute load and prevent point-loading that can damage lighter cases. Secure mixed loads with stretch film and correct strapping to maintain integrity through handling and transport.

Labeling And Documentation

Accurate pallet labeling is the backbone of mixed-pallet handling. Each pallet should carry a unique LPN barcode and a manifest that lists SKUs, quantities, lot/expiry (if applicable), and destination. If the receiver accepts an ASN or EDI advance notice, ensure the pallet manifest aligns with electronic documentation to prevent receiving delays or chargebacks.

  • LPN Practice: Assign one LPN per physical pallet and record all SKUs under that LPN in the WMS for traceability and quicker putaway.
  • Pallet manifest: Print the manifest on the pallet label or affix a manifest pouch so receiving can reconcile without breaking the pallet.
  • Scan verification: Scan each case during pallet build and again at staging to validate counts and catch mis-picks.

Safety And Load Stability

Pallet stability reduces product damage and injury risk. Follow these approaches:

  • Stacking rules: Place heavier SKUs at the bottom; align case edges to create a stable column profile.
  • Use dunnage: Interlayers and edge protection prevent crushing of lighter cases and maintain square corners for wrapping.
  • Securement: Apply stretch film vertically and horizontally as needed and use straps for heavy or tall mixed loads.

WMS And Automation Considerations

Configure your WMS to support mixed-pallet workflows: allow multi-SKU LPNs, generate pallet manifests, and produce wave or pick instructions that minimize picker travel and errors. If using automated palletizers or robotic arms, create build recipes that sequence SKUs correctly and include verification steps to prevent misloads.

Quality Controls And Training

Quality checks reduce downstream exceptions. Implement a two-stage verification during pallet build (pick scan + pallet scan) and random audits of mixed pallets before loading. Train staff on SKU compatibility rules — which SKUs cannot share a pallet (e.g., hazardous materials, incompatible food types, or temperature-sensitive products).

Carrier And Retail Requirements

Verify carrier weight limits and pallet dimensions; mixed pallets sometimes exceed palletized weight assumptions if heavy SKUs are intermingled. For retail customers, confirm whether they accept mixed pallets and the label/ASN format they require. Noncompliance can lead to refused shipments or penalties.

Checklist For Building Mixed-SKU Pallets

  • Plan pallet build: Use pick waves grouped by destination and SKU mix to minimize re-handles.
  • Scan every case: Record SKUs to the LPN during build and verify at staging.
  • Label clearly: Affix an LPN label with a manifest and handling instructions.
  • Secure load: Use interlayers, corner boards, film, and straps as required.
  • Document: Send ASN/EDI or a recipient-facing manifest to the consignee before dispatch.

In short, the Mixed-SKU Pallet can improve fulfillment efficiency when best practices for construction, labeling, verification, and partner requirements are followed. A disciplined process — supported by WMS capability and staff training — turns the complexity of mixed pallets into predictable operational value.
