  • Days-Of-Cover Aligned To Cadence: If replenishment lead time is 7 days and subscription packing occurs weekly, maintain additional days-of-cover equal to replenishment inability (e.g., 14 days = two cycles).


Step-By-Step Example Calculation


1) Determine forecasted cycle volume: 15,000 boxes this month.


2) Estimate growth variability: past promotions added a 7% surge on average.


3) Add operational failure rates: damage/replacements averaged 1.8%.


4) Choose a safety margin: 1% to cover unforeseen events.


Buffer = 15,000 × (7% + 1.8% + 1%) = 15,000 × 9.8% = 1,470 units. That becomes the target buffer for the cycle.


Adjustments For SKU-Level And Lot Constraints


High-value, low-volume SKUs need different treatment. For an expensive item with limited supply, hold a larger fixed-unit buffer rather than a percentage. Perishables should use rotational buffers sized to avoid expiration. If SKUs are lot-controlled, ensure buffer units come from acceptable lots to meet quality and batch rotation needs.
