Attribution Window

Definition

The time period after an ad view or click when a conversion can be credited to that ad.

Overview

Attribution Window The time period after an ad view or click when a conversion can be credited to that ad. Choosing the right window is a measurement decision that should be driven by customer behavior, campaign goals, and the technical measurement stack.

Start by recognizing the trade-offs. Short windows give you tight feedback and favor last-touch signals; long windows capture delayed conversions but introduce more ambiguity about which touchpoint drove the sale. The right choice depends on the product, sales cycle, and whether decisions are made by automated bidding systems or human analysts.

Step 1: Analyze Historical Time-To-Conversion

Export event-level data from your analytics or CRM and calculate the distribution of time from first touch, last click, or ad impression to conversion. Look at median and 90th percentile times for each product line. For example, consumables may convert within hours or days, whereas furniture or B2B software trials may take weeks or months.

Step 2: Align Window To Campaign Objective

  • Direct-Response (ROAS/CPA): Use shorter click windows (1–7 days) to optimize for immediate purchase actions and to provide fast feedback to bidding algorithms.
  • Brand/Awareness: Use view-through credit and longer windows (14–90 days) to capture influence on later purchases, but report view-influenced metrics separately from direct-response metrics.
  • Lead Gen/B2B: Longer windows (30–90 days) are appropriate for lead-to-deal conversion timelines; however, use multi-touch models or CRM-closed-loop analysis to avoid over-crediting early touchpoints.

Step 3: Match Platform Capabilities

Not all platforms allow arbitrary window lengths or separate view vs click windows. Inventory platform defaults and technical constraints (e.g., MMP attribution windows for app installs are often preset). Where you cannot fully align windows, document the difference and make compensating adjustments in analysis (for example, run parallel reporting with a harmonized custom attribution layer).

Step 4: Consider Conversion Type And Value

Different conversion actions should use different windows. For instance, count installs and trial starts with a shorter window, but assign lifetime value (LTV) and repeat purchases with a longer window or with separate analytical models. For high-value, infrequent purchases, use a longer window to capture true influence; then segment reports by conversion value to avoid mixing low- and high-consideration behaviors.

Step 5: Test And Iterate

Run A/B or sensitivity tests where you report results across multiple windows (e.g., 7-, 30-, 90-day) and observe how CPA, ROAS, and attribution shares shift. Use these experiments to decide which window best aligns with business goals without introducing excessive lag into optimization cycles.

Governance And Documentation

Create a measurement playbook that documents the canonical window per conversion and platform, who can change the window, and the reasons for any exceptions. Include notes for campaign managers about how window changes will affect reporting, billing (agency or media fees), and bidding strategies.

Practical Examples And Recommendations

  • E-Commerce Fast-Moving Goods: 1–7 day click window; 1 day view window for remarketing and cross-channel reporting.
  • Consumer Durable Goods: 14–30 day click window; 1–7 day view window; use multi-touch models for insight on upper-funnel investments.
  • B2B Lead-To-Revenue: 30–90 day windows tied to downstream pipeline stages with CRM-led attribution to validate marketing influence on closed revenue.
  • Mobile App Installs: Follow MMP recommendations—commonly 7–30 days for install-to-event windows depending on campaign objective.

Mitigating Reporting Noise

To reduce noise when using longer windows: report both short-window and long-window KPIs side-by-side, tag conversions by channel and touchpoint for manual audits, and use cohort analysis to inspect long-term value instead of relying solely on attributed conversion counts. For automated bidding, prefer windows that provide sufficient signal volume while keeping latency low enough for the bidding system to react.

In short, the Attribution Window should be chosen deliberately: base it on measured time-to-conversion, align it with campaign objectives and platform constraints, document settings across tools, and validate with tests. The right window gives accurate credit without slowing optimization or obscuring which campaigns truly move business results.
