Attribute Mapping

Definition

The process of matching product attributes from one data structure or system to corresponding fields in another.

Overview

Attribute Mapping The process of matching product attributes from one data structure or system to corresponding fields in another. Implementing it between an e-commerce platform and a WMS requires careful planning of which attributes the warehouse needs (dimensions, weight, storage class), how they are formatted, and where the source of truth resides.

Start by auditing both systems: list required fields on the WMS side (including required/optional flags and expected data types) and the available fields on the e-commerce or PIM side. Identify gaps and decide whether to enrich data upstream or transform it during integration. Clear ownership — who corrects missing or inconsistent attributes — avoids repeated exceptions during daily operations.

Implementation Steps

  • Inventory Required Fields: Create a WMS field catalog showing required attributes, data type, allowed values, and max length.
  • Source Mapping Table: For each WMS field list the e-commerce or PIM source field and any transformation rule (unit conversion, value lookup, concatenation).
  • Define Transformations: Unit conversions, enum mappings (size/colour normalization), and conditional logic (e.g., set storage class="hazmat" when hazard_class is present).
  • Build the Integration: Use middleware, ETL, or API connectors. Prefer idempotent, resume-capable transfers for large catalogs.
  • Test With Samples: Validate a representative set of SKUs, including edge cases: multi-pack variants, missing dimensions, and hazardous items.

Validation And Error Handling

Validation must be two-way. Before sending, the integration should run schema and value checks and produce a report of unmapped, invalid, or transformed values. On failure, records should be quarantined with a clear remediation path: back to the merchant to enrich the PIM or an automated fallback rule. For ongoing operations, implement monitoring dashboards to track mapping errors and aging exceptions.

Operational Considerations

  • Frequency: Decide whether attribute syncs are real-time, near-real-time, or scheduled. Inventory and price often need frequent updates; descriptive attributes may update less often.
  • Versioning: Keep mapping versions and roll back safely when a change causes issues.
  • Performance: Large catalogs require batch processing and optimized lookups (e.g., caching of vocabulary mappings).
  • Security & Compliance: Protect sensitive attributes and handle export/compliance fields correctly for cross-border operations.

Example Mapping Rules For WMS Intake

  • Dimensions: Source: length_in, width_in, height_in (inches) → Target: length_cm, width_cm, height_cm; transformation: multiply by 2.54 and round to 2 decimals.
  • Weight: Source: weight_lb → Target: weight_kg; transformation: multiply by 0.453592 and flag > 50 kg for special handling.
  • Storage Class: Source: product_type or hazmat flag → Target: storage_class; rule: if hazmat=true then storage_class=HAZMAT else evaluate based on temperature requirement.
  • Identifiers: Ensure GTIN/UPC are normalized to 14-digit GTIN if required by WMS for cross-referencing.

Tips For Smooth Rollout

  • Start Small: Pilot with a manageable category of SKUs (e.g., non-hazardous, single-pack items) before full catalog sync.
  • Use A Mapping Catalog: Maintain a central document or tool showing each mapping rule, examples, and owners.
  • Automate Lookups: Maintain controlled vocabularies for colors, sizes, and categories to avoid manual corrections.
  • Monitor KPIs: Track exceptions rate, time to fix, and accuracy of dimension/weight data vs. measured values at the dock.

In short, the Attribute Mapping process between an e-commerce platform and a WMS requires a controlled approach: audit fields, define transformations, automate and validate, then monitor. Proper mapping prevents mispicks, shipping charge errors, and compliance problems — delivering operational reliability across sales channels and fulfillment operations.
