Subscription operations are characterized by recurring SKUs, frequent edition changes, and varying pack contents. Step 1: Define The Identification Hierarchy


Decide what each barcode must represent: item-level SKU, box variant/version, carton, or the shipment SSCC. Document which barcodes will be scanned at each process step (pick, pack, palletize, ship). This hierarchy prevents ambiguity — for instance, ensure carton SSCCs are distinct from SKU barcodes to avoid mis-scans.


Step 2: Select Symbologies And Standards


  • Internal SKU Barcodes: Code 128 or Code 39 are common for alphanumeric SKU IDs.
  • Retail/UPC Requirements: If your box or component must scan at retail, use UPC/EAN on primary packaging.
  • Carton/Shipment: Use ITF-14 for carton GTINs or GS1-128 with SSCC for serialized shipments that carriers or partners will scan.
  • 2D Codes: Use QR or DataMatrix if you need to encode more data in a small area, such as a JSON payload for automation or returns QR codes for customers.


Step 3: WMS And Subscription Platform Integration


Map barcode values to WMS fields. Your subscription system should provide edition/version data to the WMS for label printing at pack. Implement middleware if your subscription platform cannot natively emit SSCCs; middleware can generate SSCCs, print labels, and push the SSCC back into the order record for tracking.


Step 4: Printing And Label Materials


Choose printers and label stock suitable for your environment. For refrigerated or humid packaging, select waterproof adhesive thermal labels. For high-volume cartons consider direct thermal or thermal-transfer printers. Always verify prints with a barcode verifier (ISO grade) to ensure scannability across handheld scanners and carrier imaging systems.


Step 5: Define Scan Points And SOPs


  • Pick Confirmation: Scan SKU barcode to reserve stock and reduce substitution errors.
  • Pack Verification: Scan SKU(s) and edition/version barcode to ensure correct contents, then scan the carton barcode when sealing the box.
  • Manifesting: Scan the carton SSCC into the carrier manifest at pickup to link the package to tracking and proof-of-pickup.
  • Returns Receipt: On return, scan the carton or returns QR to automatically reconcile which subscription and shipment the return belongs to.


Step 6: Training And QA


Train packers and inbound staff to read both barcode symbology and human-readable text. Run daily sampling where a supervisor rescans packed boxes and cartons to catch recurring errors. Update training materials when edition codes change or when new carrier requirements are introduced.


Step 7: Monitor Metrics And Iterate


Track pick accuracy, pack accuracy, shipping errors, and carrier scan success rate. If you see high carrier scan failures, audit label placement and print quality. If packing errors rise after an edition change, add an intermediate scan step for edition verification.


Practical Example: Implementing SSCCs For Multi-Carton Shipments


A subscription company frequently ships palletized bundles to regional hubs. They implemented SSCCs for each carton and a pallet SSCC for the pallet. Each carton SSCC is linked in the WMS to the customer subscription orders. At the pallet build, the pallet SSCC is scanned and associated with the contained carton SSCCs. Carriers scan the pallet SSCC at pickup; hubs scan pallet break-down and scan each carton SSCC into receiving — enabling full chain traceability back to the customer subscription order.


Common Implementation Pitfalls


  • Skipping Verification: Don’t rely only on scanners; use verifiers to confirm print quality meets carrier imaging requirements.
  • Poor Data Mapping: Ensure SKU and edition codes are consistently formatted between subscription software and WMS.
  • Underestimating Label Durability: Test labels under real conditions (cold, moisture, abrasion) to avoid lost scans in transit.
