How To Label, Barcode, And Ship Combo Packs For Retail
Combo Pack
Definition
Two or more complementary products packaged and sold together as one offering.
Overview
Combo Pack Two or more complementary products packaged and sold together as one offering. Proper labeling, barcoding, and shipping practices ensure combo packs scan correctly, meet retail compliance, and flow efficiently through the supply chain.
Retailers and 3PLs must decide how the combo pack is represented in systems and on physical packaging. The three common models are: unique GTIN for the pack, component GTINs displayed with a pack-level GTIN, or no new GTIN where the pack is handled as a set of separate SKUs. Each model has different implications for scanning, returns, and marketplace listings.
Barcode And GTIN Best Practices
- Assign a unique GTIN when the pack is sold as a single product: Use a dedicated GTIN/UPC/ISBN so POS and marketplaces treat the combination as one item.
- Label components clearly: If components remain individually sellable, keep their original barcodes visible or include them in the product information to simplify returns and restocking.
- Follow GS1 guidance: Use GS1 standards for identifying trade items and when to allocate a new GTIN to a bundle or kit.
Packaging And Label Content
Secondary packaging should display the pack GTIN prominently and also list component SKUs and quantities. For regulated products (food, cosmetics, chemicals), include ingredient lists, net weight, safety warnings, and country-of-origin where required. Consider a packing insert that lists component barcodes and instructions for easy returns handling.
Warehouse Picking And Assembly Rules
- Pre-assembly vs pick-and-assemble: Pre-assembled packs speed fulfillment but increase inventory SKUs. Pick-and-assemble reduces finished-goods storage but increases labor at pack stations.
- WMS configuration: Configure your WMS to recognize pack SKUs and optionally reserve the component SKUs when an order for the pack is placed.
- Quality control: Add a pack check step to confirm components and barcode presence before sealing the package.
Shipping And Marketplace Requirements
Marketplaces and retail partners often require a single scannable barcode per carton and per item. When shipping combo packs in cartons, use carton-level labels that reference the pack GTIN and include ASN or manifest data as required. For FBA and other 3PL channels, check partner-specific labeling rules; some require manufacturer barcodes to be visible or require FNSKU labels applied to the pack.
Returns And Restocking Process
Define a clear policy: will you accept open combo packs, or only sealed packs? For open returns, decide whether components will be restocked as individual SKUs or returned to a rework process. Keep return instructions and component lists on the pack to accelerate restock decisions in the warehouse.
Operational Checklist Before Launch
- GTIN decision: Assign a unique GTIN if the pack will be sold and scanned as a single item.
- WMS rules: Set up SKUs, reservation logic, and packing instructions in your WMS.
- Label templates: Design pack and carton labels that include pack GTIN, components, and regulatory info.
- Partner compliance: Confirm marketplace and retailer labeling and barcode requirements.
- Test fulfillment: Run a sample order through picking, packing, shipping, and returns to validate the flow.
In short, the Combo Pack requires deliberate choices about GTIN assignment, labeling, and fulfillment strategy. Clear barcode rules, compliant packaging content, and WMS support keep scanning, shipping, and returns predictable while protecting customer experience and retailer partnerships.
