Fit Variant

Definition

An apparel variant based on fit, such as slim, regular, relaxed, petite, tall, or wide.

Overview

Fit Variant An apparel variant based on fit, such as slim, regular, relaxed, petite, tall, or wide.

When you list apparel online, treat fit variants as a first-class attribute. Accurate listing improves discoverability, reduces returns, and helps marketplaces and Google correctly group product variants. The steps below cover policy and practical setup for common platforms and product data standards.

Prepare Your Product Data Before Listing

Start with a single source of truth in a PIM or spreadsheet that includes SKU, parent product, numeric size, fit variant, color, material, and flat measurements. Use consistent fit labels and include short definitions. Ensure each size-fit combination has a unique SKU and correspondingly accurate inventory levels in your WMS.

How To Configure Fit Variants On Shopify

Shopify supports up to three option types (e.g., Size, Color, Fit). Use "Fit" as one option and provide the fit labels as option values. Create SKUs at the variant level so each Size+Fit+Color maps to a distinct inventory item. If you have more than three variant attributes, consider using a PIM that integrates with Shopify or listing fit in a product metafield and mapping SKUs in your backend.

Mapping Fit Variants To GTIN And Marketplaces

Marketplaces and retailers often require product identifiers. Assign GTINs at the item level when fits are materially different and will be listed as separate ASINs/SKUs on marketplaces. Use GS1 guidance to decide GTIN assignment so each unique sellable item (size+fit+color) has the appropriate identifier for syndication.

Google Merchant Center And Fit Variants

Google expects each variant to be represented by the correct identifiers and attributes so it can group variants under one product if applicable. Provide unique IDs, size and fit as attributes where supported, and accurate availability/pricing per variant. Use the 'size' attribute for numeric/lettered sizes and a custom attribute or the 'item_group_id' field combined with variant-specific attributes for fit when required.

Product Page UX And Fit Information

On your product page, surface fit clearly: include a fit selector, short descriptions for each fit option, model measurements, and a flat measurement table. Use photography showing different fits on comparable models and add a "How it fits" callout near the size selector. These elements reduce uncertainty and returns.

Inventory, Fulfillment, And Warehouse Labeling

Label pick faces and bin locations with full SKU including fit so pickers choose the correct variant. Pack slips should show both numeric size and fit label so packers and customers can verify items. When printing labels for inbound receipts, include fit variant on the pallet and case labels for transparency during putaway and replenishment.

Quality Control And Returns Tracking By Fit

Track returns by SKU and include a return reason code that captures "fit-related" returns. If a particular fit variant has high return rates for consistent complaints (too small, too tight in shoulder), share findings with product development to adjust patterns or modify the fit definition for future buys.

Checklist For Listing Fit Variants

  • Data Prep: Unique SKU per size+fit+color; flat measurements documented.
  • Platform Setup: Add "Fit" as a product option where supported and map SKUs accordingly.
  • Identifiers: Assign GTINs or marketplace IDs per sellable item when required.
  • UX: Provide fit descriptions, model specs, and comparative photos.
  • Operations: Label and track inventory by full SKU; monitor returns by fit.

In short, the Fit Variant should be modeled as a distinct product attribute and often as a separate SKU. Prepare consistent data, map fit to platform options (Shopify, marketplaces, and GTIN systems), and close the loop with operational labeling and returns monitoring to keep fit-related friction low.
