Definition

Quarantine inventory is stock that has been segregated from regular warehouse inventory because it is suspected or confirmed to be damaged, nonconforming, returned, or pending inspection, testing, or regulatory clearance. It is tracked and controlled separately to prevent accidental use or shipment until issues are resolved and formal release is authorized.

Quarantine Inventory refers to inventory isolated in a WMS because of quality, compliance, damage, recall, or inspection requirements. Managing that isolation inside your warehouse management system affects traceability, throughput, compliance risk, and how quickly stock can be returned to sellable availability or removed from the supply chain.


Effective management begins with system configuration and clear operational rules. The WMS must be able to flag, segregate, and track units by quarantine reason and required action, and warehouse staff must have concise procedures for receiving, moving, inspecting, and dispositioning quarantined stock. Without both, quarantined items clog storage, delay orders, and raise audit and safety risks.


How To Configure Quarantine Locations

Set up dedicated quarantine locations in the WMS that are distinct from bulk, reserve, and returns areas. Use a hierarchy of location types: temporary receiving holds, inspection bays, long-term quarantine racks, and disposal staging. Train staff with scenario-based exercises (damaged pallet, suspected contamination, recall) and maintain a documented disposition matrix for fast, consistent decisions.
