Attribute Value

Definition

The specific value assigned to a product attribute, such as Blue for Color or 16 oz for Capacity.

Overview

Attribute Value The specific value assigned to a product attribute, such as Blue for Color or 16 oz for Capacity. Mapping those values correctly to Google Merchant Center (GMC) and similar marketplaces avoids feed rejections, improves listing quality, and ensures customers see accurate product details.

Marketplaces impose specific formats and controlled vocabularies for many attributes. Google expects attributes like color, size, and material to match its guidelines. Mapping means transforming your internal attribute values into the marketplace-accepted value set, handling unit conversions, and populating required fields such as gtin, brand, and condition along with attribute values.

Required Vs Optional Attributes

Identify which attributes are mandatory for your product categories. For many consumer goods, attributes like title, description, price, link, image link, and gtin or mpn are required. Attribute values for color, size, and material may be optional for some categories but strongly recommended because they improve search relevance and filterability.

  • Required Fields: Title, Description, Link, Image, Price, Availability, and Identifier (GTIN/MPN/brand) in many cases.
  • High-Impact Attributes: Color, Size, Material—these enhance visibility and facilitate filters.

Normalization And Controlled Vocabularies

Normalize values to Google’s expectations. For example, map internal color variants like “Navy Blue”, “navy-blue”, and “Navy” to a single value “Navy” or “Blue” depending on your chosen mapping strategy. Use a lookup table in your PIM or feed middleware to translate internal entries into the marketplace-required term.

Units And Conversions

Google accepts both imperial and metric but expects consistency per attribute. For weight and capacity, provide numbers and units in separate fields where supported, or ensure your feed supplies a standardized unit. If your internal catalog stores capacity as “16 oz”, include a converted metric field if a target marketplace or audience requires liters.

  • Capacity Example: Store canonical value 16 oz and provide convertedCapacity = 0.47 L if required by the channel.
  • Weight Example: Use grams or kilograms consistently when the marketplace recommends metric.

Validation And Feed Testing

Run validation checks before uploading. Google’s Diagnostics and the GMC feed tester flag mismatches like unsupported colors or missing required attributes. Automate checks that flag values outside expected vocabularies, missing units, or improperly formatted GTINs to avoid suspensions or disapprovals.

Practical Mapping Workflow

Build a repeatable workflow: export internal product data from your PIM, map attribute values via transformation rules, validate the feed, and test in a staging account if available. Maintain a documented mapping table to handle new values and edge cases.

  • Step 1: Extract source attribute values from your catalog.
  • Step 2: Apply normalization rules and unit conversions via middleware or PIM transformations.
  • Step 3: Validate the output against Google’s specification and test in GMC diagnostics.
  • Step 4: Monitor feed errors and update mappings when new SKUs or attributes are added.

Troubleshooting Common Errors

Feed errors often stem from unrecognized values, missing units, or incompatible number formats. If the GMC flags Color as 'invalid value' for many SKUs, inspect the mapping table and reduce free-text entries by enforcing picklists in the PIM. If weights cause shipping mismatches, ensure every variant that affects shipping has a weight value and consistent unit.

Operational Tips

  • Use A PIM: Centralize mappings and transformations to keep marketplaces synchronized.
  • Maintain A Mapping Table: Document internal-to-external value translations for auditability and quick fixes.
  • Automate Validation: Run pre-upload checks for missing required fields and invalid values.
  • Monitor Diagnostics: Regularly review GMC diagnostics and correct recurring value errors at the source.

In short, the Attribute Value must be mapped and normalized before it flows into Google Merchant Center. Standardized attribute values reduce feed errors, improve discoverability, and ensure the right product is presented and shipped to the customer.
