Do Not Roll

Definition

A handling instruction indicating that a package must not be rolled or turned over during movement.

Overview

Do Not Roll A handling instruction indicating that a package must not be rolled or turned over during movement. Accurate marking and placement are essential so packers, warehouse operators, and carriers recognize and respect the requirement across multiple touches.

What The Marking Should Communicate

Every label should make three points instantly: the orientation constraint (do not roll/turn), the proper orientation (graphic or wording), and any related handling requirement (e.g., "Do Not Stack" or "Keep Upright"). Combining short text with a pictogram increases comprehension across languages and in noisy environments where workers scan many labels per minute.

Label Design And Content

  • Clear wording: Use concise language like "DO NOT ROLL" or "DO NOT TURN OVER" in uppercase for readability.
  • Pictogram: Pair text with a standardized symbol (a cylinder crossed out or an orientation icon) to aid rapid recognition.
  • Contrast and size: High-contrast colors and large type (minimum 18–24 point depending on label size) help visibility from a distance.
  • Durability: Use weatherproof, tear-resistant materials if packages may be exposed to moisture or abrasion.

Placement Best Practices

Place labels where handlers see them at the point of pick, on conveyor, and during loading. Recommended placements:

  • Multiple faces: Apply the label to at least two adjacent vertical faces so one is visible regardless of orientation.
  • Near handling edges: Position labels close to corners or edges where handlers look when lifting.
  • On packing slips: Print the instruction on the packing slip and include it in the WMS/ERP shipping notes.

Use With Orientation Symbols And Codes

Where possible, include the instruction alongside conventional orientation marks such as "This Side Up" arrows. If you use barcode labels, avoid placing the instruction over critical barcodes or obscuring scan areas; instead, position it adjacent to the barcode and include a short human‑readable instruction in the same area for reinforcement.

Integration With Systems And Carriers

Record the Do Not Roll instruction in the shipping manifest, EDI/EDI‑like messages, and carrier pickup notes. Many carriers provide special handling fields on their electronic shipment creation pages; populate those fields so carrier personnel and sorting equipment can act on the instruction. When using third‑party logistics providers, set this attribute in the order profile so the 3PL’s WMS routes the package appropriately.

Common Labeling Mistakes

  • Obscured labels: Placing a single small label on the bottom or a recessed area where handlers can't see it.
  • Contradictory markings: Using a "Do Not Roll" label on the same face as a "Rotate 90°" instruction or an incorrect arrow orientation.
  • Poor durability: Using paper labels that delaminate during transit, losing the instruction.

Practical Example

A packer ships a tray of precision instruments sensitive to inversion. They apply two 4"×6" weatherproof labels reading "DO NOT ROLL" plus an icon on the front and right faces, set the WMS shipping attribute to "orientation-sensitive," and include the instruction on the carrier booking. During loading, the manual loader sees the label and places the carton upright; the carrier’s recorded special handling note supports a damage claim when an incident occurs elsewhere in transit.

In short, marking a package with Do Not Roll succeeds when labels are clear, durable, placed on multiple faces, and paired with documented instructions in the fulfillment and carrier systems — preventing orientation-related damage and simplifying accountability.
