Keep Away From Heat

Definition

A marking requiring the package to be kept away from heat sources or excessive temperatures.

Overview

Keep Away From Heat A marking requiring the package to be kept away from heat sources or excessive temperatures.

When a SKU carries the Keep Away From Heat instruction, packing and labeling decisions must prevent temperature exposure during the full transport lifecycle. That means selecting materials and operational steps that reduce thermal transfer, adding clear visual markings, and integrating handling rules into fulfillment workflows. The goal is to protect product integrity without over-engineering cost or complexity.

Packaging Options To Reduce Heat Risk

  • Insulated Liners: Reflective bubble liners or foam reduce radiant and convective heat during short stops or truck transfers.
  • Phase-Change Materials (PCMs): For shipments with defined safe temperature windows, PCMs hold a target temperature for several hours.
  • Thermal Shippers: Rigid insulated boxes are appropriate when repeated heat exposure is likely or when contents are high-value.
  • Ventilated Packaging: For products that tolerate airflow better than heat entrapment (some electronics), ventilation reduces heat buildup inside stacked cartons.

Labeling Best Practices

Labels should be legible, durable, and placed so they can’t be obscured during palletization. Use weather-resistant adhesive and consider a pictogram in addition to text for mixed-language operations. If a temperature range is relevant, include it (e.g., “Store below 25°C / 77°F”). For larger pallets or mixed cartons, mark the pallet-level wrap and each carton.

Operational Controls In The Warehouse

Make the handling rule operational by adding the SKU attribute to the WMS. Create staging locations away from doors, heaters, and direct sunlight. During summer months, avoid long outdoor staging during trailer swaps. Train pickers and packers to recognize the instruction and to route these SKUs to climate-protected staging zones.

Carrier Selection And Transit Considerations

Choose carriers and service levels with routing and transit times that limit heat exposure. Avoid intermodal transits where cargo may sit uncovered outdoors for long periods. For LTL shipments, request pallet position restrictions (not on the top of a trailer near the roof) when possible. When using express or same-day services, reduced transit time often mitigates the need for heavy thermal packaging.

Verification And Monitoring

For sensitive or high-value consignments, include a small temperature data logger or a single-use temperature indicator inside the carton. These devices document whether the package exceeded the safe range and are useful evidence for claims or quality investigations. For routine shipments, visual inspection of deformation, leaking, or softened seals during receiving provides a fast check.

Practical Packing Workflow

1) Pick SKU and check WMS attribute. 2) Stage in a temperature-controlled packing bay. 3) Apply thermal liner or PCM if required. 4) Place product in a rigid outer box with cushioning. 5) Affix Keep Away From Heat labels on two adjacent faces and include internal temperature instructions on the packing slip. 6) Mark pallet and note shipment instructions for the carrier.

Cost-Benefit Considerations

Insulation and PCMs add material cost and sometimes weight, affecting dimensional pricing. Use them when the value of avoided loss, returns, or damage exceeds the packaging cost. For low-value but moderately heat-sensitive items, prioritizing operational controls and clear labeling can be the most economical approach.

In short, packing and labeling for Keep Away From Heat shipments is a mix of packaging science and operational discipline: choose the right thermal protection, make the instruction visible, integrate handling rules into the WMS, and monitor when necessary to protect product quality and reduce claims.
