Palletization

Definition

Arranging and securing packaged goods on a pallet for storage, handling, or transportation.

Overview

Palletization Arranging and securing packaged goods on a pallet for storage, handling, or transportation. Preparing a palletized load for transportation means more than stacking: it requires load patterns, securement methods, pallet selection, labeling, and compliance with carrier and regulatory requirements to ensure the unit load survives the route.

Pallets must be engineered to resist shifting, compression, and vibration encountered during handling and transit. In practice that means matching the load pattern to carton geometry, using appropriate unitization (wrap, straps, adhesives), picking the correct pallet material, and verifying the assembled unit load against carrier weight limits and securement rules for the mode of transport.

Load Patterns And Stability

Choose a load pattern that balances density and stability. Column stacking provides high density and predictable weight distribution but can slide under lateral forces. Interlocked or brick patterns distribute lateral stresses and are preferred for tall or mixed-size stacks. For irregular shapes, hybrid patterns or tray-based layer packs may be necessary. Always strive for uniform pallet face fill with minimal voids; use filler cartons or dunnage to avoid weak columns.

Unitization And Securing Methods

  • Stretch Wrap: Common for most use-cases; start with a few base wraps at the pallet skirt to create a foundation, then progress up the load with increased tension for rigidity.
  • Strapping: PET or steel straps provide top-down compression and are essential for heavy loads or when the load will be double-stacked in trailers.
  • Adhesives And Glue: Hot-melt or pressure-sensitive adhesives applied between layers can prevent slippage on slippery cartons.
  • Corner Boards And Edge Protectors: Protect corners from strap pressure and improve column strength against compressive forces.
  • Roll-Off Prevention: Use anti-slip sheets between pallet and first layer when pallets are used on inclined conveyors or in intermodal transfers.

Choosing The Right Pallet For Transit

Consider mode-specific requirements: maritime shipping may require ISPM 15 compliance for wood pallets to meet phytosanitary rules, while air freight favors lightweight, strong plastic pallets to save weight. For refrigerated transport choose plastic or treated wood that resists moisture and mold. Verify pallet dynamic load capacity for forklift picks and the static capacity for storage and stacking during transport.

Labeling, Traceability, And Documentation

Pallet labels should include pallet ID, contents (e.g., GTINs and quantities), batch or lot numbers, and handling instructions. Use GS1-128 barcodes for carrier and WMS compatibility. For cross-border shipments include required customs documentation and any phytosanitary certificates or export declarations. Maintain a digital record of pallet assembly with photos or WMS snapshots when shipping high-value or regulated products.

Regulatory And Carrier Compliance

U.S. road carriers and intermodal operators expect loads to be secureable and within legal weight limits; FMCSA cargo securement rules apply to certain commodities. For export, ISPM 15 rules apply to untreated wood pallets. Always confirm carrier-specific requirements for pallet dimensions, height, and weight to avoid detention, reloading, or refusal at the dock.

Practical Checklist Before Dispatch

  • Inspection: Check pallet integrity, strapping tension, and wrap coverage; replace damaged pallets.
  • Height And Weight: Verify load height against trailer clearance and weight against axle limits for the planned route.
  • Labeling: Ensure scannable labels are visible on at least two opposing faces for easy scanning by carrier or warehouse.
  • Securement Test: Conduct a quick pull test or vibration simulation for fragile or high-value loads when feasible.
  • Documentation: Attach or transmit necessary shipping manifests, bills of lading, and export documents.

In short, the Palletization process for transportation is a combination of proper load patterns, reliable unitization methods, pallet selection, and regulatory compliance. Attention to each of these elements reduces transit damage, avoids carrier fines, and keeps supply chains moving predictably.
