Two-Person Lift

Definition

A handling instruction indicating that two people should lift or carry the package together.

Overview

Two-Person Lift A handling instruction indicating that two people should lift or carry the package together.

Recording and communicating a Two-Person Lift requirement ensures the instruction travels with the shipment from pack to carrier and back to the recipient. Clear, redundant communication reduces handling errors at receiving docks, last-mile transfer points, and cross-dock operations. A combination of visual labels, WMS flags, documentation fields, and carrier notices creates the necessary visibility for safe handling.

Where To Encode The Requirement

Place the two-person lift instruction in every system and physical touchpoint that handlers consult. Typical places include:

  • Packing Slip: A printed note or icon on the packing slip alerts packers and receiving staff before the box is opened.
  • Shipping Label: A bright, standardized label on the package face (not just the top) increases visibility on conveyors and pallet stacks.
  • WMS/TMS Fields: Use a dedicated handling-flag field that appears on pick lists, outbound manifests, and carrier documents.
  • EDI/ASN: Include handling instructions in electronic advance ship notices so receivers and carriers' systems can auto-flag shipments.

Labeling Best Practices

Design labels to be unambiguous and machine-friendly when possible:

  • Visibility: Use contrasting colors, icons (two person silhouette), and place the label where it is visible when the carton is stacked.
  • Standard Text: Use the consistent wording “Two-Person Lift” or “Team Lift” rather than ad hoc phrases.
  • Durability: Use weather- and scuff-resistant labels if shipments go through cold chain or long-haul transit.
  • Barcode-Linked: Where WMS can read labels, link the label barcode to handling metadata to prevent human error.

WMS And TMS Configuration

Configure system prompts so handlers cannot miss the instruction:

  • Pick Ticket Prominence: Show the handling flag at the top of the pick ticket, and—if possible—require an acknowledgment before closing a pick task.
  • Outbound Process: Block staging or shipping if a two-person item is scanned without a paired user present (for systems that support team pick workflows).
  • TMS Visibility: Push handling flags into the carrier manifest and EDI so drivers and line-haul handlers see the requirement in their routing apps.

Communicating To Carriers And 3PL Partners

Carriers and 3PLs must be included in the communication chain. Practical steps include:

  • Service-Level Notes: Add handling instructions to the bill of lading and the carrier’s pickup manifest.
  • Carrier Agreements: Include obligations to observe handling flags in contracts and rate negotiations—and confirm they have suitable equipment and staffing.
  • Pre-Alerting: Use ASN messages and email notices to inform the receiving party of incoming two-person-lift shipments so they can pre-position staff.

Inbound And Cross-Dock Handling

At receiving and cross-dock points, make the instruction actionable:

  • Staging Areas: Designate staging lanes for team-handled items so they aren’t routed to single-lifter pick zones.
  • Receiving Checklists: Receivers confirm the presence of the label and note whether the carrier honored the instruction; record exceptions for corrective action.
  • Incident Tracking: If a two-person flagged item was mishandled, capture what went wrong (label obscured, staffing shortage, driver omission) and update process controls.

Sample Implementation Steps

Follow these steps to roll out consistent communication of two-person lift requirements:

  • Define Thresholds: Create objective criteria for when items require two-person handling and publish them in SOPs.
  • Update Systems: Add handling flags in WMS/TMS and EDI templates; test end-to-end to ensure visibility on pick lists and carrier manifests.
  • Design Labels: Produce a standardized label and include it in packing-station supplies.
  • Train Partners: Train internal staff, carriers, and 3PLs on the meaning of the label and the expectation of compliance.
  • Monitor Compliance: Audit inbound deliveries, track exceptions, and use corrective actions when instructions are missed.

In short, the Two-Person Lift requirement is effective only when it’s recorded and communicated at every touchpoint: packing slips, shipping labels, WMS/TMS, and to carrier partners. Use consistent wording, durable labels, system flags, and partner training to make the instruction visible and enforceable across the supply chain.
