Mold Rack

Definition

A heavy-duty rack used to store dies, molds, tooling, and other dense industrial assets.

Overview

Mold Rack is a heavy-duty rack used to store dies, molds, tooling, and other dense industrial assets. Safe storage and handling are essential because molds concentrate large masses in small footprints, and mishandling can cause injury, equipment damage, and production delays.

Safe mold storage combines engineered racking, defined procedures, and trained personnel. Engineering controls (rack selection, anchoring, and decking) minimize structural risk, while administrative controls (procedures, signage, and training) reduce operational mistakes. Below are steps and practices to implement immediately.

Site Preparation And Rack Selection

Select racks with rated capacities that exceed the maximum weight of the heaviest mold plus handling attachments. Anchor frames to the floor per manufacturer instructions and local codes. Choose shelf decking that distributes concentrated loads; solid steel or thick timber decking is often preferable to wire decking for point-loaded molds.

Lifting And Placement Procedures

  • Pre-Lift Inspection: Inspect slings, hoists, fork tines, and crane hooks for wear and rated capacity before every lift.
  • Centering And Blocking: Center the mold on the pallet or cradle and use blocking or cribbing to prevent shifting during movement.
  • Controlled Placement: Lower molds slowly; avoid free-fall seating which can create shock loads damaging both mold and racking.

Racking Layout And Location Strategies

Place high-use molds nearest the production line to minimize travel. Keep heavy, infrequently used molds at lower levels to reduce lifting heights and the potential energy in a dropped load. Design aisles to allow safe forklift approach angles; maintain minimum clearances for operator visibility.

Labeling, Documentation, And Asset Control

  • Durable Labels: Mark shelves with maximum allowable loads and location identifiers that map to your asset database.
  • Digital Records: Tie each mold’s location, maintenance history, and lifting instructions to your WMS/CMMS; include weight, center-of-gravity notes, and any special rigging requirements.
  • Sign-Out Procedures: Use a crib or digital checkout for molds that leave storage for service to maintain visibility of location and custody.

Inspection And Preventive Maintenance

Inspect racks monthly for signs of deformation, weld cracking, or bolt loss. Replace or repair any damaged components before returning a bay to service. Also inspect mold contact points for corrosion or contamination that could compromise parting surfaces.

Training And Emergency Planning

  • Operator Training: Train forklift drivers and riggers on load securement, center-of-gravity awareness, and the specific challenges of moving molds.
  • Emergency Procedures: Document steps for dropping or dislodged molds, including exclusion zones and first-aid responses.
  • Lockout/Tagout: Apply LOTO when molds are removed for repair and ensure stored molds that are part of powered equipment are isolated per procedure.

Quick Safety Checklist

  • Shelf Ratings Posted: Capacities visible at each level and verified against item weights.
  • Access Clearances: Aisles and lift paths free of obstructions.
  • Inspection Records: Scheduled inspections and repairs logged in your CMMS or maintenance binder.
  • Protective Barriers: Guard rails or bollards protecting rack ends from vehicle impact if racks are adjacent to traffic lanes.

In short, the Mold Rack is a heavy-duty rack used to store dies, molds, tooling, and other dense industrial assets; combining engineered racks, clear procedures, regular inspections, and trained personnel keeps tooling secure and reduces downtime and injury risk.
