How To Set Up A Product Testing Program In A Manufacturing Facility
Product Testing
Definition
Testing performed to evaluate a product’s safety, performance, quality, durability, or compliance.
Overview
Product Testing Testing performed to evaluate a product’s safety, performance, quality, durability, or compliance. A structured in-house testing program helps manufacturers catch defects early, verify production quality, and reduce reliance on external labs for routine checks.
Setting up a product testing program requires defining objectives, selecting test methods, specifying equipment and facilities, training staff, and building recordkeeping procedures that tie test outputs to production lots and corrective action workflows. A robust program balances speed and cost with the statistical confidence needed for quality decisions.
Program Objectives And Scope
Start by deciding what you need from testing: incoming-material verification, in-process control, finished-goods acceptance, or accelerated life/durability testing. Objectives determine the frequency of sampling, acceptable quality limits (AQL), and whether tests are destructive or non-destructive.
Selecting Methods And Standards
Wherever possible adopt published, validated test methods (ASTM, ISO, IEC). For proprietary or novel products, develop internal methods and validate them against an external reference lab. Maintain a test-method library with version control and approvals.
Equipment, Facilities, And Calibration
- Equipment: Match instruments to methods—force testers, environmental chambers, particle counters, electrical safety analyzers, etc.
- Facilities: Provide controlled environments for tests sensitive to temperature, humidity, or electromagnetic interference.
- Calibration: Implement a calibration schedule tied to ISO/IEC 17025 best practices and keep traceable certificates for all measuring equipment.
Personnel And Training
Assign a responsible technical lead for the testing function. Train technicians on sample preparation, test execution, data capture, and safety. Maintain written standard operating procedures (SOPs) and require competency checks after significant method changes or equipment replacement.
Sampling Plans And Statistical Controls
Define sampling plans using quality standards (AQL) or ISO statistical methods. For high-volume production, use control charts (SPC) to detect process drift. For critical safety attributes, increase sample sizes or use 100% inspection where warranted.
Data Management And Traceability
Capture test results in a laboratory information management system (LIMS) or integrate test data into your WMS/ERP. Link results to batch numbers, serial numbers, and production dates so investigations and recalls can be executed quickly. Maintain retention policies for test records to meet regulatory and contractual requirements.
When To Use External Labs
External accredited labs are still essential for formal certification, complex analyses, and dispute resolution. Use in-house testing for routine quality checks and pre-screening. When a test falls outside your equipment or accreditation capability, contract a third-party laboratory.
Practical Implementation Roadmap
- Phase 1 — Plan: Define scope, standards, and budgets; identify critical control points.
- Phase 2 — Build: Purchase equipment, write SOPs, set up facilities, and hire/train staff.
- Phase 3 — Validate: Run validation samples, compare with third-party lab results, and tweak methods.
- Phase 4 — Operate: Put program into production with routine calibration, audits, and KPI reporting (yield, defect rates, cycle time).
In short, the Product Testing program in a manufacturing facility should be a deliberate blend of in-house capability and external laboratory partnerships, defined by clear objectives, statistically sound sampling, calibrated equipment, and controlled data flows to support quality, compliance, and continuous improvement.
