Resin Identification Code

Definition

An identifier printed or encoded on shipping packaging for the supply-chain purpose described by 'Resin Identification Code'.

Overview

Resin Identification Code An identifier printed or encoded on shipping packaging for the supply-chain purpose described by 'Resin Identification Code'.

The Resin Identification Code is a practical tool for compliance and materials handling when embedded in shipping and warehouse processes. For logistics teams, the RIC helps manage hazardous-material compatibility, storage segregation, recycling and returns. Applying consistent capture and documentation practices reduces inspection delays, avoids rejected loads at recyclers, and supports sustainability reporting and regulatory compliance.

How To Capture RIC Data During Receiving

Make RIC capture a standard step in the receiving workflow. Require suppliers to include the resin code on packing lists and supplier labels. When items lack visible codes, sample a unit and record the resin type in the WMS after verification. Use barcode cross-references where possible so operators scan a single barcode and the system auto-populates resin-type fields into the lot record.

Where To Place Codes And Labels For Logistics Efficiency

Place RIC marks where they remain visible after outer packaging is removed and where automated readers can scan them during sorting or conveying. For secondary packaging (cartons with multiple units), include the dominant resin code on the carton and on a pallet-level manifest. For reusable transit packaging, consider embossing the RIC in a durable location to avoid repeated label applications.

Compliance Considerations And Documentation

While RICs themselves are not typically regulatory declarations, they belong in compliance documentation for shipments constrained by material compatibility (e.g., incompatible plastic-lined chemical drums) or export rules. Include resin-type information on bills of lading, packing lists, and hazardous-material documentation when the resin affects transport conditions. For customers with sustainability targets, provide RIC-based volume reports to substantiate recycled-content claims.

Integration With WMS And TMS

  • WMS Fields: Add a resin-type attribute to SKU and lot records so storage logic can consider resin when allocating space.
  • TMS Routing: Use resin data to select carriers or consolidation points that accept specific resin streams for recycling or reuse.
  • Reporting: Configure regular reports on inbound and outbound volumes by resin to support customer KPIs and EPR obligations.

Handling Mixed And Multilayer Materials

Mixed-resin or multilayer items present the greatest handling challenges. Where feasible, segregate such items and route them to specialized processors. If supplier packaging uses multiple resins intentionally (e.g., barrier films), capture the multilayer status in your WMS and display clear handling instructions on pick faces to avoid accidental mixing with single-resin streams.

Practical Example: Cross-Dock To Recycler

A distributor consolidates used stretch-wrap and pallet-topper films. Each receiving record includes the RIC (commonly '4' for LDPE). The WMS groups films by RIC and by contamination risk; a TMS load planner then routes a dedicated film trailer to a film reclaimer. Documents sent with the load include pallet manifests listing RIC volumes and supplier lot numbers, streamlining acceptance and payment at the reclaimer.

Operational Tips And Best Practices

  • Supplier Agreements: Require RIC disclosure on shipper labels and nonconforming-material hold procedures in supplier contracts.
  • Quality Checks: Use periodic audits and simple tests (density flotation) to verify that the declared resin matches the material.
  • Staff Training: Educate shipping, receiving, and returns teams on RIC interpretation and the difference between resin type and recyclability.
  • Traceability: Keep RIC data linked to lot and PO numbers so disputed shipments can be traced to their source quickly.

In short, the Resin Identification Code should be embedded in receiving, storage, and shipping workflows as a material attribute. When captured consistently and combined with supplier documentation, RIC data reduces handling errors, supports compliance and recycling contracts, and improves the value recovered from plastic packaging streams.
