How Warehouse Managers Should Handle EPAL 2 Pallets: Storage, Racking, And Transport Tips
EPAL 2 pallet
Definition
An EPAL pallet format measuring 1200 x 1000 mm, often used for heavier or broader European loads.
Overview
EPAL 2 pallet An EPAL pallet format measuring 1200 x 1000 mm, often used for heavier or broader European loads. Implementing it in a warehouse requires changes to storage patterns, racking allocation, handling procedures and transport planning to preserve safety and efficiency.
Warehouse managers who receive or issue EPAL 2 pallets must treat them as a distinct SKU class where necessary. That means labeling storage locations, training staff on the different handling characteristics and updating WMS location dimensions so put-away and replenishment logic respect the larger footprint.
Racking And Bay Planning
Racking choices depend on bay depth and aisle widths. Single-width selective racks planned for 800 mm pallets may waste space if you place 1000 mm pallets there; alternatively, two 800 mm pallets side-by-side cannot be replaced by two 1000 mm pallets without reconfiguring lanes. Reserve specific bays for 1000 mm pallets and reflect that in your racking labeling and WMS rules.
Handling And Equipment Considerations
Forklift tines, pallet jacks and automated guided vehicles can handle EPAL 2 pallets but require attention to tine spacing and load stability. When using mechanical pallet handling (palletizers or conveyors), adjust guides and sensors to account for the wider deck to avoid jamming or misfeeds. Operator training should emphasize center-of-gravity changes and different stacking behavior.
Pallet Stacking And Load Stability
Stacking patterns change with width. For stacked loads, check how product corners align with block positions to avoid concentrated stresses that can damage both pallet and product. Use anti-slip sheets, corner boards or strapping when necessary to secure layers; always follow EPAL repair and safety guidance if pallets become damaged.
Transport And Trailer Loading
Plan trailer loading patterns using software or simple layout sketches before executing. EPAL 2 pallets will often reduce pallet count per trailer versus 800 mm pallets, so calculate cost per pallet position and balance that against the reduced damage risk from better-fitting pallets. If you consolidate mixed pallet sizes, load trucks so heavier or wider pallets are bedded first and secured to prevent shifting.
WMS, Inventory And Labeling
Update WMS location attributes to include pallet footprint dimensions. Create specific SKU/pallet-type mapping so put-away logic does not attempt to place 1000 mm pallets into 800 mm locations. Label dock doors and staging lanes for pallet types to reduce misloads and returns. Track pallet inventory by type to support pooling agreements and repair cycles.
Repair, Pooling And Certification
Only accept EPAL-stamped repaired pallets from licensed repairers if you rely on certification for pooling or cross-border movements. Maintain a pallet inspection routine on receipt and prior to dispatch: check for broken blocks, loose nails and correct EPAL stamps. For pooled systems, align contracts with partners to confirm acceptance of the 1200 x 1000 format.
Quick Operational Checklist
- Label Storage: Reserve and mark specific racking bays for EPAL 2 pallets in your WMS.
- Train Staff: Brief operators on handling differences and stacking precautions.
- Validate Equipment: Confirm conveyor, palletizer and forklift compatibility before onboarding large volumes.
- Plan Loads: Simulate trailer patterns and check carrier acceptance for 1000 mm pallets.
- Inspect Returns: Verify EPAL marking and condition on incoming repaired pallets.
In short, the EPAL 2 pallet requires deliberate handling changes in a warehouse: dedicate space, update WMS and material-flow settings, validate equipment compatibility and enforce inspection and repair standards to keep operations safe and efficient while benefiting from the wider deck for heavier or broader loads.
