Do Not Squeeze

Definition

A handling instruction warning that the package must not be subjected to squeeze.

Overview

Do Not Squeeze A handling instruction warning that the package must not be subjected to squeeze.

For warehouse teams the label changes routine choices: how to store, pick, transfer, and load shipments. A 'Do Not Squeeze' instruction requires a combination of procedure, training, and controls so everyday activities—stacking, palletizing, using conveyors, or tucking cartons into cages—do not apply damaging lateral pressure.

Receiving And Inspection

When 'Do Not Squeeze' cartons arrive, receiving should visually separate them from bulk cartons and verify label presence on multiple faces. Inspection includes checking for existing compression damage that may have occurred in transit and logging any issues to claims if necessary. Use designated lanes or color-coded staging racks for sensitive goods.

Packing And Palletization

  • Pallet Pattern: Use brick or column patterns that limit side pressure; avoid tightly packed stretch wrap that squeezes corners.
  • Buffering: Add edge protectors, corrugated partitions, or corner boards to distribute side load and prevent point pressure.
  • Non-Stack or Low-Stack: Mark pallets as non-stackable when internal items cannot bear vertical or lateral loads.

Material Handling Equipment Use

Forklift operators should avoid pinching packages between tines or against pallet edges. When moving cages, trolleys, or carts, ensure load widths and restraints don't compress cartons. For conveyor systems, set guide rails and stops to prevent crowding that squeezes packages together during accumulation.

Picking And Order Consolidation

  • Batching: Don’t mix 'Do Not Squeeze' units with heavy or oversized items in the same tote; keep them in separate compartments.
  • Hand Picks: Instruct pickers to carry fragile cartons with flat support beneath rather than gripping sides.
  • Robotics And Automation: Validate end-of-arm tooling and clamp pressures to avoid side squeeze; program softer grip profiles for sensitive SKUs.

Loading And Carrier Handover

Mark pallets or crates with visible indicators and place them where carriers can access without crowding. When loading trucks, use blocking and bracing to prevent lateral movement that leads to squeezing during transit. Communicate instructions to drivers—physically on the pallet and in the load plan—so last-mile handlers also adopt the same care.

Training, SOPs, And Audits

  • Training: Short micro-training for pickers, packers, and drivers highlighting 'Do Not Squeeze' examples reduces mistakes.
  • SOPs: Add specific steps for handling these packages into standard operating procedures (receiving, picking, packing, loading).
  • Audits: Periodic audits of label placement, packaging integrity, and handler compliance reveal gaps and improvement areas.

When To Escalate

If damage keeps occurring despite clear labeling, escalate: involve packaging engineers to redesign inner supports or outer corrugation, and consider alternative carriers or transport modes less likely to apply squeezing forces. Maintain claim records and root-cause analysis so corrective actions are data-driven.

In short, the Do Not Squeeze instruction changes handling from implicit care to documented controls: separate storage, adjusted pallet patterns, calibrated equipment, and targeted training all reduce compressive damage and keep products ship-ready.
