Keep Away From Rain

Definition

A handling symbol indicating that a transport package should be protected from rain and kept dry.

Overview

Keep Away From Rain A handling symbol indicating that a transport package should be protected from rain and kept dry. For warehouse staff, this instruction translates into specific receiving, staging, storage, and outbound actions to prevent moisture exposure and maintain product integrity.

Warehouse teams are the practical guardians of the symbol. A warehouse receives packages in varying weather, with differing carrier behaviors, and through multiple points of contact — so procedures must be clear, visible, and integrated into daily workflows. Proper handling reduces product loss, customer claims, and rework.

Receiving And Initial Inspection

At the dock, receiving staff should perform a quick visual inspection for signs of moisture: damp cardboard, water stains, wet shrink-wrap, or salt residue from sea spray. If a lot has been exposed, move it to a protected inspection area immediately to assess damage. Note any visible wetting on the delivery receipt and take photos to document pre-existing exposure before accepting a damaged shipment.

Staging And Short-Term Storage Rules

  • Off-Floor Storage: Keep pallets at least 4–6 inches off the concrete using pallet skids or racks to prevent splash damage.
  • Covered Staging: Use covered staging lanes for inbound units with the symbol; avoid leaving them in open-air staging bays.
  • Segregation: Segregate moisture-sensitive items to a dedicated dry area to simplify handling and counting.

Pick, Pack, And Packing Slip Controls

Integrate the Keep Away From Rain instruction into WMS pick/pack screens so packers are prompted to use secondary moisture protection when required. For example, instruct packers to add a waterproof poly bag or tape top seams on cartons. Use printed handling stickers that must be applied to the parcel exterior; do not rely solely on the original manufacturer marking that may be obscured during repacking or consolidation.

Loading And Outbound Handling

Ensure outgoing loads with the symbol are prioritized for enclosed trailers whenever possible. If only a flatbed is available, mandate the use of a certified waterproof tarp and trained personnel to tension the tarp correctly. Document the load configuration on the manifest so the carrier is aware and accountable for weather protection during transit.

Cross-Dock And Transfer Best Practices

Cross-dock operations are high-risk for rain exposure because goods may move quickly between vehicles and dock doors. Minimize outdoor transfer time by aligning arrival windows, using covered transfer corridors, and equipping dock teams with quick-deploy pallet covers. Assign a dedicated lane for moisture-sensitive freight to reduce handling steps.

Training And SOPs

  • Visual Training: Train staff to spot the symbol quickly and practice common scenarios (e.g., unplanned rainfall during unloading).
  • Written SOPs: Maintain clear, accessible SOPs that define who moves shipments into covered space, how to tarp open trailers, and how to document wet claims.
  • Equipment: Equip docks with pallet covers, shrink-wrapping stations, and a supply of heavy-duty tarps and straps.

Technology And System Triggers

Use WMS flags and carrier EDI instructions to surface the Keep Away From Rain requirement at every touchpoint. Create alerts for outbound loads where enclosed trailers are unavailable so logistics planners can reassign resources. Barcode scans at the dock should automatically check for the handling symbol and route the item to dry staging rather than general staging.

Damage Assessment And Claims Handling

If a package marked Keep Away From Rain arrives wet, document condition with photos, log temperature/humidity if relevant, and isolate the affected units. Early documentation reduces disputes: note time received, carrier information, weather conditions, and the sequence of handling events. For internal process improvement, analyze incidents to determine whether failures were due to carrier practices, packaging gaps, or warehouse process breakdowns.

In short, the Keep Away From Rain marking requires a combination of clear SOPs, physical controls (covers, off-floor storage), WMS triggers, and staff training. When warehouse staff integrate these measures into daily routines, they protect product quality and minimize moisture-related losses throughout the distribution flow.
