SSCC Label

Definition

A logistics label carrying an SSCC, typically encoded in a GS1 barcode, to uniquely identify a shipping unit.

Overview

SSCC Label A logistics label carrying an SSCC, typically encoded in a GS1 barcode, to uniquely identify a shipping unit.

For warehouse teams the SSCC Label is both a simple and critical item: simple in format, critical in downstream visibility and compliance. This practical guide explains how to generate valid SSCCs, design label templates that scan reliably, integrate labels with a WMS/TMS, and avoid common rollout pitfalls.

Step 1 — Numbering And Governance

Before printing labels, put a numbering policy in place that ensures uniqueness and traceability.

  • Assign responsibility: Decide which entity (shipper, 3PL, or packer) will generate SSCCs for each service type.
  • Use a GS1 Company Prefix: Build SSCCs using your GS1 prefix so they’re uniquely associated with your organization.
  • Reserve ranges: If multiple sites or clients are involved, reserve numeric ranges to avoid collisions.

Step 2 — Generate The SSCC

Generating an SSCC consists of concatenating elements and calculating the check digit.

  • Construct the 17-digit base: Typically: extension digit + GS1 company prefix + serial reference.
  • Calculate check digit: Apply the GS1 modulus 10 algorithm to produce the 18th digit.
  • Automate generation: Configure the WMS or label-printing system to create SSCCs automatically when a pallet is built.

Step 3 — Design The Label

A label must be readable by human operators and scanners in typical warehouse conditions.

  • Barcode symbology: Use GS1-128 with Application Identifier (00) preceding the 18-digit SSCC.
  • Human-readable: Print the full SSCC below the barcode and include the AI text “(00)” if your customers expect it.
  • Size and quiet zones: Maintain minimum barcode height and margins per GS1 General Specifications to maximize scan reliability.

Step 4 — Print And Apply Labels

Standardize label materials and placement to maintain consistency across shipments.

  • Printer settings: Use thermal transfer printers with suitable ribbon and label stock for durability during transport.
  • Placement: Place the barcode on a flat face of the pallet, avoiding edges and corners; ensure no overlapped tape or stretch wrap obscures the code.
  • Redundancy: Apply a secondary label on an adjacent face for long-haul shipments or multi-point scans.

Step 5 — Integrate With WMS/TMS And ASNs

Labels are most effective when the SSCC is transmitted electronically to trading partners and logged in your systems.

  • Store SSCC in WMS: Capture the SSCC in the shipment record and map it to internal pallet IDs and pick/pack details.
  • Include in ASN: Add SSCCs to ASNs or EDI 856 messages so the receiver can validate inbound pallets against expected shipments.
  • Inform carriers: Share SSCCs with carriers for event capture and to avoid mis-routed deliveries.

Validation And Quality Control

Testing and QA prevent downstream delays and claims.

  • Scan tests: Validate label readability with mobile and fixed scanners across the expected range of distances and lighting.
  • ASN reconciliation: Verify that SSCCs on physical pallets match the SSCCs in the ASN before dispatch.
  • Audit trail: Log who generated the SSCC and when, plus any reassignment or destruction of units.

Common Troubleshooting Scenarios

Problems crop up during implementation; here are common issues and fixes.

  • Unreadable barcode: Increase print density, use higher-contrast label stock, or reposition the label to a flat surface.
  • Duplicate SSCCs: Review generation logic and reserved ranges; reconcile with partners immediately to correct records.
  • ASN mismatch: Implement a pre-shipment scan-and-verify step to ensure the SSCCs sent electronically match the applied labels.

In short, the SSCC Label is a straightforward but powerful tool for uniquely identifying unit loads. Governance over SSCC generation, standardized label templates, consistent printing and placement, and tight integration with WMS/TMS/ASN workflows ensure labels deliver reduced errors and stronger visibility across the supply chain.
