Protect From Radioactive Sources

Definition

A handling symbol indicating that the contents can be damaged by ionizing radiation and should be protected from radioactive sources.

Overview

Protect From Radioactive Sources A handling symbol indicating that the contents can be damaged by ionizing radiation and should be protected from radioactive sources.

This operational guide helps fulfillment managers put the Protect From Radioactive Sources marking into practice: from receiving and storage to picking, packing, and carrier handoff. It focuses on simple, auditable steps that minimize radiation exposure risk without disrupting throughput.

Receiving And Inbound Controls

At receiving, inspect incoming cartons for the protective marking and confirm the merchant's handling instructions. Update the WMS immediately to flag the lot/SKU as radiation-sensitive and route cartons to a pre-defined secure bay away from inspection scanners or known radiological traffic flows.

Storage And Segregation

Designate a storage zone physically separated from docks, radiography areas, and any known radioactive-material storage. Use vertical separation (different racks) and distance where possible. Ensure signage at the zone entry explains the reason for segregation so temporary staff do not inadvertently move inventory into high-risk areas.

Picking, Packing, And Packing-Line Controls

When picking radiation-sensitive SKUs, the pick ticket should show the protective instruction prominently. On the packing line, add a stepped check: confirm WMS flag, verify label placement, and choose carriers or routes that avoid radiography where feasible. If the carrier requires scanning, follow the merchant’s documented waiver or choose an alternative inspection method.

Carrier Booking And Handoffs

  • Booking Notes: Add explicit text such as "Radiation-sensitive — Do Not X-ray" to booking instructions and BOLs.
  • Driver Briefing: At handoff, remind drivers about the handling flag and request awareness at stops where radiography/medical shipments may be present.
  • Alternate Routing: When available, select carriers that can accept handling constraints or route parcels to avoid known radiological facilities.

WMS And Documentation

Use WMS attributes to automate separation and alerts. Fields to use: "Radiation Sensitivity," allowed inspection methods, required storage distance, and emergency handling steps if accidental exposure occurs. Keep an auditable log of any deviation and merchant approvals for scans so liability is tracked.

Training And SOPs

Train staff to recognize the symbol and follow SOPs: when encountered, move items to the secure bay, notify the supervisor, and consult the packing list and WMS. Include brief practical exercises—e.g., simulated handoffs and decision trees for forced scans—to reduce hesitation during real events.

Incident Response And Quality Management

If exposure occurs, quarantine the lot, notify the merchant, and document the event (time, scan type, estimated dose if known). Perform product testing when warranted and follow merchant instructions for disposition. Use incidents as root-cause opportunities to adjust SOPs, label visibility, or carrier agreements.

Cost And Performance Considerations

Segregation and extra handling add cost. Quantify these costs versus expected loss from radiation damage and negotiate with merchants for handling fees if sensitivity is high. Use zone optimization and WMS automation to keep operational overhead minimal while preserving product integrity.

In short, the Protect From Radioactive Sources handling symbol becomes effective only when paired with clear WMS flags, dedicated storage controls, carrier communication, staff training, and incident documentation. Implemented pragmatically, it reduces damage and claims while keeping fulfillment throughput predictable.
